SPAM 2012 "Poor Man’s Scouting System"
by: Warren Boudreau

SPAMs poor man’s scouting system is for teams that have more people than money. It requires just one laptop to store the data collected by scouters using (gasp) paper and pen.

The files included are the MSExcel spreadsheet, a MSPublisher version of the scouting sheet, and a MSWord file for Thursday scouting. The Word document is optional.

The instructions included in the spreadsheet are pretty thorough, but let me know if you have any questions.

2012_Scouting_Database.xls (603 KB)
2012scoutingAsize.pub (591 KB)
2012 Scouting Questionnaire.doc (29.5 KB)
2012scoutingAsize.pdf (328 KB)

This looks pretty great guys! I had a few questions.

  1. What is “Shot Location”? I see on your ScoutingSheet you have a picture of the fields with numbers 1-6, is that what that is for?
  2. On the ScoutingSheet you have the red team on the left and blue on the right, and your picture of the field below it has the blue on the left and the red on the right? Is there a reason for that?
[EDIT] Nevermind, I see that on the ScoutingSheet you have the orange fields marked as Hybrid and the blue-green fields marked as Teleop. That clears that up, just the Data Entry Sheet should reflect that as well. Thanks again.[/EDIT]

I’m pretty impressed with all the automation behind this, how come you didn’t make the Scouting Sheets automatically generated as well?

I’m going to try this out over the next couple days, hopefully we can use this as our scouting system is a little dated.

I always put the red alliance side of the field on the left and blue on the right.
This year is a bit confusing since the blue key is on the left and the red key is on the right.

Yes, the shot location is for hybrid mode. Sorry for the confusion.

The data for the strategy sheets gets automatically added in. I set it up as a stand-alone tab so that you can print off blank copies in advance if there is no printer available during the event. Then you just fill then in by hand.

This year, I think we are going to try to use Bluetooth to transfer a PDF version of the strategy sheet to a tablet that the strategy chief/coach will have. It will save some walking. Especially in St. Louis.

Enjoy the program. Let me know if you find anything wrong.

There is a problem with the MSPublisher version, I can’t seem to download it, please advise.

PM me with your email address and I will send tou the file directly.

I will also post a PDF version for those that do not have Publisher.

I should have thought of that earlier. Doh…

Hey Warren,

Thanks so much for putting this out there. 1875 is going to bring a laptop and printer this year as well. Any teams are welcome to join with us if they like.

Just wondering if you could add a column for ‘time needed to balance’; Also I am a little confused as to what goes in the two boxes under “shots attempted” and the other items in Teleoperator. I am guessing one of the boxes is the location and the other the number of shots perhaps?

Thanks!
nathan

I guess I forgot to explain the wide boxes on the scouting sheets.

That is for scouters to make tic (or tally) marks for each shot made. After the match, they just add them up and put the number in the box next to it.

It’s easier than tracking all those numbers in your head during the match.

My team, 2486 The CocoNuts, used your scouting system at two regionals this year, and at both regionals the scouting came in handy, since we made it to elimination matches at both. Our scouting team really liked your system, and we will be using it again in St. Louis. Thanks for putting this out there!

Thanks for the feedback.

I have a Mark III version in beta test right now.

I added some columns for tracking robot drive configuration (wide/long & number of wheels) and made some minor changes to make sorting by team number work a little better.

If you are interested in trying it out, send me a PM and I will see about sending you the updated version.

And if anyone can tell me how I can download the list of team numbers for an event into an Excel spreadsheet without hand modifications, I would be eternally grateful.
