This paper documents Team Ford FIRST’s stand-alone IR beacon and IR sniffer. It was designed to free up the Edubot from field beacon duty, it operates from almost any supply (“wall-wart” or 12 volt battery), generates either TYPE 0 or TYPE 1 signals, or if paired with another identical board, produces synchronized TYPE 0 and 1 signals. The sniffer is a hand-held board that uses a small speaker and visible LED to help humans perceive (sound and sight) the IR beacon signal.

The PCB’s were produced by a vendor that is offering FREE PCB’s to qualifying teams (for suitable acknowledgment) - www.pcbexpress.com. Free schematic/PCB design software from www.cadsoftusa.com was used to design the circuit board. The PICkit 1 USB based development system was used to program the small PIC processor that generates the beacon signals.

Hopefully this information will be of some help to the teams out there that want to use the IR beacon/sensor pairs. Who knows what encoding 2004 will use?
