People who do robots full time, what's your story?

Always around this time of year, I start thinking, “jeez, hanging out in the shop with students building robots is way more fun than my day job, I should just do this all the time”
So folks that do this full time, how did you get there and what’s the good/bad/ugly?

I’m mainly wondering about folks that work for Vendors, FIRST, or are teachers, but all stories are welcome

Bonus question (if you’re willing to share) do you make less than what you would in industry?

I wish I had actual thoughts to share. Not that the day job is horrible, but I wouldn’t mind taking a three month vacation to do robots full time.

That actually seems like the ideal scenario. Convince said employer to donate three months of your time and let you just not do your day job.
