What are the omni wheels for?
I’m guessing they were connected to encoders for odometry — just doing it off of drive encoders isn’t very reliable because they can slip. 1986 did something similar, iirc.

Drop down omnis to escape T-bones. We have the encoders right on the gearbox.
My reaction, too. In addition to being a terrible structural material, that stuff is awful to work with.
It’s cheap, I guess.

Yes, because mechanums slip and encoders cannot tell the difference between slip and traversing.
