pic: Mecanum Wheels at their Day Job

Joining the masses travelling out of NY after Hurricane Sandy, spotted these at Dulles. I’m sure that teams have used Mecanum wheels in mechanisms, but it was neat to see them in the real world.

I imagine these are used to load cargo into the lower holds. The decks of freighters are filled with rollers to make it easy to get things on and off, makes sense to have rollers on the loaders too. Wouldn’t it be fun to have sheet of plywood and a running start?

I have seen Mecanum and Omni wheels in industry quite a bit lately, and usually not in contact with the floor (as shown in the OP). My favorite use so far was at a water park, where omniwheels were used on a platform, much like the picture in the OP, to move around the big family water rafts. I would liked to have taken a picture, but I liked more to not have taken a camera on a water slide.

But can it strafe on the bump?

Excellent. Scissor lift and mecanum on the same machine. Let the FRC-design flaming commence!

Watching a Mythbusters episode (Propane tank rocket/pain tolerance) I saw a Window motor and mecanum wheels within a 10 second period.

I love how all MB’s data collection is now done by NI guys using cRio’s and Labview.

If anyone was interested in those wheels specifically, I believe they are manufactured/distributed by Kornylak.

It’ll never make it to Einstein.

It’ll never make it past inspection.

Just like to point out, that youtube video was 2:17 that is thunderchickens number. Sorry just hooked on frc adding my .02 cents

Our 2008 robot had both mecanum wheels and a sissor lift! And we would have made it to nationals if not for a potentiometer breaking.
