pic: Power Up for NES

This is a small project I’ve been working on throughout the season; it’s been completed for a bit and I’ve been posting updates on the FRC subreddit, but now seemed like a more appropriate time for a CD post.

This is a graphical modification of the original Donkey Kong for NES themed around FIRST Power Up and the 2018 season. Jumpman is Dozer, Donkey Kong is the boss, barrels are now power cubes, fireballs are flaming batteries, Pauline’s purse is a redline motor, etc.

As you could imagine, working with code for a 35 year old game is a nightmare. There are lots of weird space saving techniques that limited the colors I could use, and each sprite can only have three colors as it is (plus a transparent color). At first, I edited directly in hex and with a dedicated sprite modification program, but that turned out to cause some problems so this version was just the hex editor and graph paper.

As this game is set up to run on an actual NES (I did quite a bit of testing with a custom programmable cartridge) you’ll need an NES emulator to play. Pretty much every arcade emulation suite will have one (especially on a raspberry Pi) but if you need to download one, I recommend FCEUX: http://www.fceux.com/web/home.html

If you’d like to get a hold of a physical cartridge to play on your NES or equivalent, send me a PM.

I thought this was just pretty cover art… then I read the description. Amazing work! Probably the coolest FRC project I’ve seen in a long time. I’ll install and play it this weekend.

Mind posting some in game screenshots? I’m too lazy to install the game but it sounds pretty cool.

Perfect Timing! I just finished a play through video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH4HESm8MIc
YouTube doesn’t like 256 x 240 video for some reason. There are a few color artifacts, but this should be a good overview

Here’s a screenshot album as well: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XU6ub4Hz-yMoPC6RxUVLTOnEDddYvPVA

check your link?

I’m speechless. This is very amazing! any chance we will get a N64 version? lol

WOW. Just wow. Nuff said

I love the NES game. How much or what is involved with getting an actual cartridge?
