Another view of the untested Vex transmission. Hopefully these pictures will inspire some creative play…
Out of curiosity, why are you using double gears for the gearbox? Is that to reduce the chance of a gear breaking, increase efficiency, or is there a microscopic shifter in there I can’t see?
microscopic shifter of course
Ha, I wish! I actually just used the double gears for good measure, and also because there was enough room for them without making the design overly complicated. It does make it a little bit stronger, but from my experience nothing would break if it just had 1 gear on each shaft. I actually saw several gears explode at the AZ VEX regional, but they were being put under much more stress than these ones would be.
Redundancy is always a good thing, especially when the breaking strength of the gears are not advertised like in vex. At the Massachusetts regional over at QCC we broke 4 of the small tooth gears on our arm. But my question for you is where is the shaft collar for the motor’s axel? Aren’t you afraid of it slipping out at a competition and loosing that side of your drive?
The shafts shouldn’t fall out; I roughed up the ends of them so that they don’t slip out of the clutches. I’ve used this method on several other robots, and as long as the shaft isn’t getting a bunch of side load it stays in.
And I’m not actually in the competition, I was just playing around with some ideas for the game.
Actually, all the strengths are listed here:

Thanks for the answer. So with all these Vex gearboxes, when can we expect a contest to see who can build the strongest gearbox? I’ll give it to whoever has their Vex robot lift them off the ground.

O thx!, i spent 2 hours searching for them the other day, guess i looked in the wrong places
