Every year Team 23744/9475 does a project called operation blessing box. In our community of Monessen, Pennsylvania unfortunately there are so many people living in poverty. Operation Blessing box is kind of like Toys for Tots, for teenagers. Even though these teenagers don’t need toys, they are often lacking essential items. Some of the most commonly requested items include:
- Soap
- Beds
- Warm winter jackets
- Feminine hygiene products
We even had a kid that needed a bike because he had to work to support his family. Its really heartbreaking that teenagers in our community don’t have these essential items so many of us take for granted.
The way it works is that kids fill out a form asking them questions about things they want/need. After they fill it out, the items are purchased and anonymously donated, as well as an age appropriate STEM activity. Last year, alongside our parent organization The Full Potential Project and local FIRST teams, we filled out blessing boxes for over 200 kids in our community. We hope that this year we can exceed far last year with the help of the Chief Delphi community.
