PNW District Championship Projections 2017

There are two weeks of PNW district events remaining, which means it’s a good time to see how the district championship is shaping up.

I’ve done this the last three years:
2016: https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145965
2015: https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135841
2014: https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128388

The methodology hasn’t changed, for details see the previous threads. Best of luck to everyone still competing.

Key:

in=will have enough points to make it in
out=won't make it
~in=probably going to have enough points
~out=probably won't have enough points
bubble=could easily go either way

Best-case points to make it to district cmp: 33
Worst-case points to make it to district cmp: 108
Best estimate: 52

Thanks for doing this again. Do you remember where the point cut-off ended up last year?

I still really don’t understand how it was so much higher in 2015 than 2014 with the same number of teams.

If I’m recalling correctly it was 62 pts - 65pts!

Eric,
The historical district cutoffs have been 63, 65, 66
If we use 62-67 as a bubble it would look like this with four event to go:

It is due in part to the change in how qualification points are calculated. In 2014 the qual points were based purely on win-loss points earned. It was possible to earn 24 points if you won all 12 matches and 0 points if you loose all of your matches. It was also possible for more than 1 team to earn 24 or zero points. For 2015 and later they adopted an algorithm that attempts to create a standardized distribution of qualification points. Now the team in 1st place gets 22 points regardless of how many matches they won while the second place team will always get 21 points even if they won the same number of matches as the top qualifier. At the other end of the scale the lowest ranked team always earns 4 points even if they loose all of the matches.

The bigger impact is in the middle as the distribution of the points in the middle of the pack is based on the number of teams at the event. That is compounded by the fact that we switched the max number of teams at an event to create less variation in the number of teams at an event. That was done w/o knowing that FIRST was going to change the qual points calculation in part to equalize the points pool between the events. IE the variation in number of teams meant that you were more likely to earn more points at a smaller event than at a larger event.

For the sake of comparison, here’s the total number of teams in each bin, where each row is the label in your list, and the column is the label in my list:

in      ~in     bubble  ~out    out     InFlight's label
0       13      57      24      0       Teams with a second event still
0       6       3       6       8       Teams with two events below 62 District points.
4       12      0       0       0       Teams In by Points (68 and Above)
0       1       2       0       0       Three Chairmen's Awards winners with a second event still
0       2       0       17      0       None

I am inclined to agree with you that my estimated point cutoff may be somewhat low; it historically has been. On the other hand, it’s usually not far off.

In 2016 the 64th ranked team before districts (5588) had 58 district points.

We, 5588, were the last team in but we were ranked 65th before DCMP and only got a slot due to a decline.

This is neat! Can you generate a similar prediction for MAR?

Your wish is my command: https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1663677

While you did only get a slot due to a decline, there was a team (2980) who won chariman’s with 44 district points, so you were rank 64th.

Now that the week 4 events, here’s my updated projection:

Key:

in=will have enough points to make it in
out=won't make it
~in=probably going to have enough points
~out=probably won't have enough points
bubble=could easily go either way

Best-case points to make it to district cmp: 48
Worst-case points to make it to district cmp: 89
Best estimate: 54

The estimated point cutoff has gone up from 52 to 54.

This is probably a dumb question, and I assume it must mean I still don’t understand FRC Locks (and so is maybe a question for Brandon), but…

Do you know why your predictive method shows a cutoffs in the mid 50s, and frclocks shows teams in red (locked out?) all the way up to 63 points? I had assumed that teams frclocks showed as red were eliminated in even the most favorable distribution of the remaining points, but that doesn’t seem consistent with what your method is showing (which has worked really well in the past).

It looks to me like FRC Locks thinks that there are only 39 slots at the PNW championship. I believe he has confused the number of teams attending the district championship and the number of teams that advance to worlds from the district.

In terms of Locks there are 38 teams that are definitely in.

There are 26 remaining openings, with two more Chairman’s Award Winners regardless of points.

There are 23 teams with two events, between 69 and 51 district points that are still in the contention to various degrees.

Currently there are 56 teams with a second event this week. There are all so 10 third event teams that can compete for the Chairmen’s award still.

There are 35 teams with two events and below 50 District Points that are in all likelihood out.

Someone brought this to my attention and I fixed it. I had the number of DCMP slots for peachtree and PNW swapped. It is now correct and shows down to rank 25 as locked, and some teams that were locked out are now back on the bubble where they should be.

Please, if anyone as any questions, even if you think they’re “dumb”, feel free to PM me. Thats why my name links to my chief account at the bottom of the web page :). It could be just you misunderstanding something and I’d happily explain, or like in this case it could be my fault.

While I’m here, might as well give my thoughts on PNW:
The lowest ranked team I have locked in has 82 points.
The highest ranked team I have locked out has 52 points.

This tells me obviously that the cutoff is somewhere between but not including those numbers (usually on the lower end).

With two events left its rough to estimate but I would say somewhere around 55, so I agree with SoftwareBug2.0’s prediction

Its official.

Point cutoff was 59pts. 61-64 are all DCA.

This didn’t actually turn out to be the official list. 5937 and 2148 declined invitiations ( :frowning: Hope to see you next year!) and 4131 and 488 were added on.

I was thinking we should start a thread about the PNW District Championship once the Fantasy FIRST draft begins. I have no idea how they do this, but those Fantasy FIRST guys seem to know exactly when the event attendee list becomes official. We should create it in the Regional Competitions sub-forum, since threads in there actually show up in the portal and therefore get way more hits. I’ve noticed that the DCMP threads in the “District Event” sub-forum have proportionally dismal rate of activity and they’re normally just back-and-forth between the few users who know where to find these threads. This is a district championship. The casual users of this site, including those who don’t log in and can’t change their portal settings, deserve to hear and participate in the chatter about this event just as much as they need to hear about the Northeastern Manitoba Hudson Bay Regional Sponsored by York Factories.

End rant.

That was at the end of Auburn, basically the moment FIRST said “Its official.”

I may just start a DCMP thread now, load in is tomorrow…

We plan to draft the week of the event, or as soon as the list looks like it has enough teams. On the scheduled day, we draft. Works pretty well, huh? :wink:
