POLL: Social media access on school district's network

Does your school district block social media sites?
Specifically, can you access the image https://i.imgur.com/670dxIT.png - an imaged used by an online Java Tutorial.

  • Yes, our district blocks social media including imgur
  • Some, our district blocks some social media, but not imgur
  • No, our district does not block social media sites
  • N/A, our team meets outside a district facility

The background:
Our team is using the IntelliJ IDEA EduTools Plugin (basically the equivalent of the new IntelliJ IDEA Education Edition) and the Stepik courses Java.Introduction, Java.Classes, etc. to teach Java Development to our students. We ran into an issue that the course hosts its images on imgur.com. Our district’s network blocks social media sites, including imgur. I’ve opened a bug report with JetBrains about the issue. They followed up to say they may look into changing how/where the images are hosted.

I’d like to get some numbers on the prevalence of school districts blocking social media sites to add to my bug report. Thus this poll. I understand this will not be very scientific. But it can provide a general idea, especially among a key demographic for a tutorial such as this.

Do they block Imgur? Yes
Could I access Imgur? Also Yes

VPNs are very prevalent in some circles.
Less so are setting up routers to create a pirate network off the unrestricted hardlines, but also present. A student looking to learn Java is probably savy enough to get around the usual low skill network restrictions.

Even if there is no way to get around network restrictions and you really need to use it, there are some Imgur mirrors out there.
