Portcullis Thickness

We are wondering how wide the portcullis itself is. If we want to have a hook that grabs the portcullis, how wide should it be? We know that the gap is 5 in tall and that it is 3’8" wide, but what’s the measure of the thickness of the portcullis?

P DOOR PLASTIC (from Field Component PDF)

  1. Material: 1/8" Clear Polycarbonate

So that is the only thickness in the entire thing?

Yes from what I can tell…

Check 7:30 where he lifts it

I don’t think that’s the whole thing, that’s just the thickness of the polycarbonate on each side. There is a steel grate sandwiched between the two sheets of polycarb.

So we were wondering how thick the steel grate was. We’re trying to make a hook that can go under the port cullis and pick it up and possibly also fit under the sally port.

Looking at that video, it seems to definitely be thicker than 1/8"

There is no steel grate its all polycarb…I still think its 1/8 thick single polycarb sheet

This. Also reference http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141585&highlight=portcullis.

The manual quotes “The door is constructed of a steel frame with a 1/8 in. thick polycarbonate sheet covering the opening in the frame.”
Seeing WITH the polycarbonate sheet COVERING the opening in the frame implies that 1/8 is not the entire thickness.

Covering the opening of the (portcullis) frame, which is correct it does not mean two sandwiched sheets, keep in mind costs one sheet suffices. They would not use two sheets when they can simply paint grates on.

Sally port uses two sheets of polycarb for wood pattern print to be sandwiched between

Did you look at the link to another forum? Because on that forum, they said that the polycarbonate sheet jut has bars PAINTED onto it, but that steel is under it and someone else said that there’s an aluminum grid on the back of the polycarbonate sheet

So it may not be sandwiched, but one side might have a steel/aluminum grid.

The polycarb is backed at the bottom edge by an ~ 1"x1" square steel bar.
I’ll see if I have a photo of the Kickoff field to show it.

P.S.
The bar is just the bottom edge of the metal frame holding the polycarb.

Here’s a photo: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19880&d=1453761170

So with the steel, does it have one or two sheets of polycarbonate covering it? In other words, is the steel sandwiched between two sheets or uncovered on one side.

Notes:

  1. Material: 1/8" Clear Polycarbonate
  2. Grid to be painted black on one side.

NOTE: Secure the
bottom of the
Portcullis
Polycarbonate using
#10-24 hardware.

The polycarb is only on the Courtyard side (?).
Then the bar.

Then the Neutral zone.

P.S.
I think I reversed which side the polycarb is on, so don’t take that on my word.

Thank you all for your help!!! This was very informative :]

Sorry if any of my comments seemed sarcastic, I didn’t mean them to be.

No problem… I like to know how things are constructed now we know too.
