Potomac Vex League (PVL) Events

DC, MD, DE, PA, WV and VA Vex folks!

A thread for announcing and discussing the Potomac Vex League goings-on, including Scrimmages, Practices, Workshops.

The Potomac Vex League is a evolving organization of robotics clubs and robotics competition teams. It’s members are primarily those associated with FIRST robotics activities, but certainly not exclusively FIRST teams.

The PVL’s recent activities have focused on giving schools and FIRST teams opportunities to practice for and compete in this FIRST FVC season’s Hangin’-A-Round game. Future events will include Vex workshops (programming and construction techniques), and fun and challenging competitions using homegrown game rules.

If you live, work or attend school in anywhere in the DC, Maryland/Delaware, West Virginia, or Virginia regions, then Janet Lathan and I hope you subscribe to this thread and join in the fun. In this Mid-Atlantic section of the East Coast we all have started a thriving FVC/Vex community, and Janet and I look forward to helping it grow to realize its full potential.

Blake Ross

The next Potomac Vex League (PVL) Hangin’-A-Round (HAR) Scrimmage is going to be Saturday April 21st at Stonewall Middle School in Manassas VA. Mark the date on your calendars now.

Plan on bringing a robot better than any of the ones you see or hear about at the previous weekend’s FVC world championship in Atlanta.

We expect this Scrimmage will continue our track record of making each PVL event better than the one before, and we will be building on the great success of Gar-Field High School’s recent GFHS/PVL HAR Scrimmage.

The April 21st competition is open to clubs, FIRST teams, school groups, and even individuals (all high school or younger).

FIRST’s HAR rules will be used. More details will come as we get closer to the date.

See you there!
Blake
PS: Also, don’t forget
FIRST FVC (& FLL) Exhibit, Feb 17, at the Building Museum in DC. Tell Dee Tomczak if your FIRST team can bring an HAR robot to demonstrate.
FIRST FVC Exhibit for VIPs at the NASA/VCU FRC Regional, March 2, in Richmond. Tell Darlene Panteleo if your FIRST team can bring an HAR robot to demonstrate.

I’d like to thank Blake and PVL for helping out so many teams and building a field for all of the area teams to use. It’s great to have such fine help in our area, and the increased exposure and ability to spread FVC it brings. And it saves 116 some gas bills from lugging around our Vex demo field too!

LL - Right back at you…

In particular, I would like to take a moment to thank Jim Koca of your FVC/FRC 116 team(s) - So much of this season’s PVL accomplishments never would have gotten off the ground without his participation and guidance.

FIRST, 116 and the PVL are all lucky to have him with us.

Blake

Does anybody within two states of Washington, DC have a field or part of a field with official games tiles that we could borrow? We’re using a line-tracking kit and we need just the right color. Any tips about using the tracker are also welcome.

You can buy the exact right tapes from McMaster Carr, the part numbers are listed on the VexLabs website under field construction. Additionally you’re going to want to have the sensors calibrate when the robot is on the field. That is, even if you find what the sensor value is on one field, at a different field the value can be different. This is because of different light levels and types.

FYI - The Virginia Championship used the Softiles that can be bought at Lowes. The event organizers confirmed that those tiles are a legal substitution for the tiles listed in the FVC Bill Of Materials.

I have some of the colored tiles (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green) from Lowes that I use in our PVL H-A-R field; and I would gladly loan them to you, but obviously you want the gray ones. Sorry, but I don’t have any of the gray ones.

Blake

Thanks everybody for answering my plea for field components. Blake directed me to cheap tiles, so I’m satisfied for now. I may hit you up for the practice field at some point, Blake.

Mark your calendars!
FYI - Hangin-A-Round Scrimmage April 21st at Stonewall Middle School in Manassas VA.
FYI - Possible Scrimmage and end-of-season socializing May 5th in Petersburg VA.

Also:
FYI - At the NASA/VCU FRC Regioinal Jim, Melinda, and Justin Koca recieved (earned!) this an Outstanding Volunteer award for their far-above-average contributions to FIRST over many years and recently to FVC, in particular!

Folks - If you are planning to compete in the April 21st scrimmage, please start sending me emails letting me know to expect you.- Thanks - Blake

Folks,

We will be using the full Hangin’-A-Round Autonomous and Teleoperated sequence of play during the SMS Roboticon Scrimmage’s matches on April 21st.

See the info in the email that Mark McLeod posted here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54755)
AND
the info in the attachment to that message. Both are from the FIRST FVC folks and contain important advice about how to properly configure your robot to operate in matches that contain both autonomous and teleoperated periods.

Contact me if this is a problem for you.

East Coast Time:
13:20 Match Q11 - Vexy Things (FVC 3549) from Alexandria just rained balls into their high goal to do their part of a 3549 & 3541 alliance win over their opponents by 104 to 33. Great job VT!

13:25 Match Q13 - Holly Rollers (FVC 3065) & 3794 lost 23 to 55, despite controlling the Atlas Ball. :frowning:

13:50 Match Q16 - GFHS Fight Club (3148) & Suburban Legend (3486) seemed to fall victim to field or transmitter problems or robot technical problems. 3148 loaded up with 7 balls in the initial seconds of the match, but were unable to unload them after lining up on the high goal. Their ally appeared to encounter the same problem when they stalled at the foot of the other red high goal just a little later. GFHS loses 6 to 46

13:55 Match Q17 - The Battlefield HS Robocats (3317) and Mr Roboto (2024) win in a match where 2024 is used to score high while 3317 uses their bulk and strong drive train to complement 2024’s scoring by playing tough defense and controlling the Atlas in the crucial final seconds of the match. Result; Robocats & 2024 collaborate to win 85 to 15. Go Purple team!

14:05 Match Q19 - GFHS Gears of War (3013) & RoboDox (599) used 599’s great 4-5 balls per dump to outscore their opponents, even though they were not able to get the Atlas onto their side of the field. 599 & 3013 pull out a win 53 to 44 without the Atlas or the Autonomous bonus.

15:24 Match Q33 - 1st Salem Vex Team (3739) reached into S.H.I.R.T.'s (3679’s) ball basket and took one out. Then they carried it over to their own high goal and scored with it. ROTFL! It was like the cartoon scenes where Bugs Bunny tweaks someone’s nose or gives them a kiss. (Don’t feel badly for SHIRT, their robot is working very well, even though they didn’t win this match (Atlas ball?) - They will need this to keep them humble  ).

15:32 Match Q35 - Holy Rollers (3065) & BAPHLE (3391 - Thiele’s Pwny Express bot) - Using the the Holy Roller’s Atlas ball work, these allies take BAPHLE’s high goal scoring to the bank and win 60 to 33! Go Rollers!

15:50 Match Q39 - Gears of War (3013) & RoboDox (599) ride 599’s high goal bucket dumps and 3013’s successful Atlas Ball herding to another win. 52 to 17 this time.

16:33 Match Q48 - GFHS Fight Club (3148) and Dark Matter (3495) use 3495’s quick 3-ball scoop to score high while 3148 bulks up on balls in their pick-up system and then does Atlas ball duty for the alliance. However, their opponents steadily chip away at their lead and eventually pass them. Even with the Atlas ball, Fight Club and 3495 go down for a canvas nap, 30 to 49. :frowning:

16:38 Match 49 - Vexy Things (3549) & Panthers (3642) vs Robocats (3317) & Team Unlimited (2013). As before the VT gather a bushel of balls; but this time the Robocats are between VT and the high goals for over half of the match, seriously cutting into the VT’s scoring. However, VT does get to rain down one excellent softball downpour into a goal. The Robocat alliance ends up with the Atlas. The final score is 82 to 27 to the Robocat/Unlimited Alliance. This Northern Virginia duel is decided by Unlimited scoring, Robocat defense, and the Atlas Ball. Go VT! Go Robocat Purple!

17:15 Match Q57 - Holy Rollers (3065) & NNEZ (3703 from China) vs 3289 & 3349 is another match that appears to be marred by technical difficulties (The Rollers bot was unable to manuever for the majority of the match - Could have been RF interference, could have been a malfunction on the bot). This low scoring duel goes against the Rollers 39 to 0 :frowning:

17:30 Match Q59 - Gears of War (3013) & 3536 vs 3218 & 3728 - This Time GFHS does some scoring but appears to have been too successful loading their conveyor with balls. Getting them out and into the goal is seems too hard until the final 6-7 seconds of the match when they unclog and send some where they belong. These help, but the opposing alliance has the advantage; and our home town boys wind up on the wrong end of a 14 to 58 score.

So, If my notes are correct, after 67 matches, the W-L-T records of these teams are:
3013 Gears of War 2-1-0
3065 Holy Rollers 1-2-0
3148 Fight Club 0-2-0
3317 Robocats 2-0-0
3549 Vexy Things 1-1-0

<< Inserted by Blake during an “edit”… Word on the street is that at least one of Fight Club’s matches (#48) will be replayed tomorrow because signs are pointing to some source of inteference disrupting both Fight Club’s and Dark Matter’s communication between their transmitters and robots. It will be interesting to see how many of the matches above need to be replayed. From my seat in front of computer screen displaying the webcast, 3013, 3065, 3148, and 3317 all looked like they were having trouble all day long. 3549 didn’t seem to be affected, but perhaps they were too in a couple matches where I thought they would have performed better. Stay tuned. >>

More Qualifying Matches, the Draft, and the Elimination Matches tomorrow… Good Luck to the PVL region’s teams! Good luck to everyone!

Hi everyone,

For all the folks who are thinking about attending the April 21st Scrimmage at Stonewall Middle School, Manassas, VA, check out some of the cool photos of the robots I took at the Gar-Field High School Scrimmage back in January by visiting my website: www.CrestOak.com. I have created some animated GIF images of the robots, which allow you to see the robots from all angles.
The event is tons of fun so I encourage you to all sign up. Stonewall MS liked the scrimmage hosted by Gar-Field so much they decided to host one themselves.

FRIDAY:

Sorry - I missed the first 6 (68 thru 73) of today’s schedule. Cut my pay in half

Match 68 - Gamerfreek says Fight Club (3148) & 2124 lost to 2073 & 2078

Match 69 - Vexy Things (3549) & 3720 vs 3251 & 3642 - VT wins 94-10

10:05 Match 75 - BFHS Robocats (3317) & Charter Blue Crew (3219) vs Near North (1305) & Exploding Bacon (1902) - The pruple Cats and the blue Crew were given a rough time by the Canadian Bacon duo. In a match filled with trafific jams, the Atlas ball wound up on the Oink-Boom side of the field and so did the higher score Robocats fall short, 6 to 51.

10:45 Match 83 - Holy Rollers (3065) & Tenacious Techs (3047) vs 3675 & 2055 - The Rollers attack on the Atlas Ball ties up both opponents for the first 30 seconds, while the Techs load and score high. When SHIRT switches over to scoring balls, they do a good job of closing the ball gap, but don’t catch up with the Techs. However, the Atlas that 2055 keeps on SHIRT’s side of the field doubles their results and the Roller Tech alliance falls short 39 to 82

11:15 Match 89 - Vexy Things (3549) & Hicks (3251) vs Big and Mighty (3349) & GIR (3505) - During Auto the Hicks lift fails catasrophically! The Hicks can no longer score high; but they wisely switch to successfully attacking the Atlas Ball. VT spends the first 45 seconds scooping up everything near them and then they take it to the hole n a blizzard of three pointers. After this the VTs gather several more but with the Atlas in their way, only manage to score 3 more truly the final 3 seconds of the match. It’s all over for the B&M GIR alliance: 96 to 33 VT wins!

11:40 Match 94 - Gears of War (3013) & Eagle Engineering (3144) vs Warrior robotics (585) & Fighting Eagles (3007) - Shaking off yesterdays technical difficulties, the Gears begin to hit their stride. In a match that sees the Atlas Ball ejected at about the 3/4 mark; the high goal scorers and hangers rule. It comes down to being denied a spot on the platform/bar by an already hanging opponent and the Gears’ alliance falls short 38 to 47.

11:50 Match 96 - Fight Club (3148) & Daemon Rex (3368) vs Robocats (3317) & 100 Scholars (3370) - In this cross-county duel the high-goal bots of Pr Wm Co are allied with smaller machines. Fight Club abd their ally collide during Autonomous. Fight Club’s alliance makes the first Atlas Ball move. The Robocats go over to try to steal it, but Fight Club leans their heavy nose on it. Also Daemon Rex hangs. In this low scoring match Fight Club never looked back. Their ffew 3-pointers, the Atlas and the Hang all combine to tip the scales their way 37 to 4.

Rematch! - 13:50 Match Q16 - Fight Club (3148) & Suburban Legend (3486) vs Hicks (3251) & Freedom Way (3789) - Autonomous is close. The opponents take the Atlas first. 3251 breaks down when trying to score a large load of balls. 3486 scores several balls near the end. 3789 is too slow in the attempt to hang. Fight Club and The Legends score enough 3-pointers to overcome the Atlas doubling. FC wins a nail-biter 34 to 31

Rematch! - 16:33 Match Q48 - Fight Club (3148) and Dark Matter (3495) vs Driven Bolts (2073) & Myotonics (2078) - the opponents take Auto. FC & DM come roaring back. The Atlas is bumped away from FC’s side and stays there. DB mistakenly overloads their hopper and in the final seconds can’t rotate their 5-ball payload up for a score, keeping the match close. In the end, However, FC & DM fall just one point short of overcoming the Atlas disadvantage and are given a 39 to 40 TKO.

Rematch! - 17:30 Match Q59 - Gears of War (3013) & Resada Squad (3536) vs MainFrame (3218) & Psychotic Strawberryz (3728) - The opposition take Auto and intially has the Atlas. MF does well up high for bluewhile RS counters for GOW & RS; but even the speeedy RS can’t make up for the loss of the Atlas. GOW loses this battle 35 to 52.

So, If my notes are correct, after 67 matches, the W-L-T records of these teams are:
3013 Gears of War 2-2-0
3065 Holy Rollers 1-3-0
3148 Fight Club 2-2-0
3317 Robocats 2-2-0
3549 Vexy Things 3-1-0

PVL folks,

See my post above to see a recap of Friday AND Thursday results. I have been editing yesterday’s post to insert today’s results into it. I have now reached the 10000 character limit in that one, and consequently I will use this post to track the Vexy Things progress if they get drafted into the finals.

With their 3-1-0 record, and their ability to score mass-quantities of balls worthy of a Conehead skit; I am optimistic they will be in an alliance.

3013 Gears of War 2-2-0 Qual Rank = 44
3065 Holy Rollers 1-3-0 Qual Rank = 82
3148 Fight Club 2-2-0 Qual Rank = 45

But Hey! Don’t put your tools away yet!
The **Potomac Vex League ** off-season is just beginning…
We all need to learn how to do something that stumped us or seemed out of our reach during this season (I have a long list).
We all need to try unusual, risky, or just plain fun designs in low-pressure just-for-fun scrimmages.
We all need to contribute to and attend workshops where we share, teach and learn. A rising tide floats all boats…
We all need to recruit at least one new team member.
We all need to inspire more teams to form and support them through their rookie year(s). This year we finished with 559. Next year, let’s have at least 1000!

Janet Lathn, Terri Wiseman and I look forward to seeing you at the Stonewall Middle School, Lockheed Martin and Potomac Vex League’s Roboticon Hangin’-A-Round scrimmage April 21st. I especially want to hear some stories about the experience of going to the World Championships from you who got to attend!
We aren’t done yet. FVC is just getting started!

G. Blake Ross
Co-Chair of the PVL

Folks,

Just a quick reminder…

Like all other times we have used the PVL H-A-R field that Luke and I built; this Saturday I don’t expect to put down the tape (the octagon and the other lines) that you would see in the open parts of a 100% official field.

If anyone is planning to use a robot that needs that tape for line following (or any other mysterious reason), contact me and we can see what we can do to give you what you need.

Also the field tiles are Red, Blue and Yellow or Green, not the uniform gray recommended for a 100% official field.

Blake

Roboticon Plaques Update: Mrs. Wiseman has gotten the engraved plates made for us (Big Thank You to her!). I now need to mail them to you so that you can affix them to the wooden plaques you received the day of the event.

I also want to mail DVDs/CDs of pictures and video in the same packages.

My goal is getting them to your schools/mentors/coaches before the end of the school year.

Blake
PS: Next season is looking good. We may have enough young teams to be able to form a Middle School league (I’m thinking of a 4-tournament season with about a dozen robots in each event); and continue to have events open to all comers (similar to this last season).

Next season we need to come up with a scheme for determining an multi-event league winner (maybe a NASCAR-style point system?).

Folks,

The 2007-2008 PVL Schedule has been announced! There are many more events planned for this year than last.

There are two new Potomac Vex League threads started for the 2007-2008 FTC season.

The CD thread is here: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=643729#post643729
Right now it only contains a pointer to the associated thread in the VexLabs Forum.

The VexLabs Forum thread is here: http://www.vexforum.com/showthread.php?t=1675

Does Lowes sell any gray ones? Are they found in the flooring section? I’m not seeing Softiles online at lowes.com.

MD, DC, PA and Virginia teams (anyone else if they don’t mind long drives),

The Dec 8 PVL Tournament (Quad Quandary) scheduled for Westminster, MD has been moved to Woodlawn HS (west side of Baltimore) on Dec 15. The event will be held in cooperation with FTC 388 and FRC 768, and the College of Southern MD. It will be run much like the Battlefield event that was held Nov 17. The event is open to any team with a Quad Quandary-legal robot. FTC registration not required and there is no entry fee. Teams may participate with more than one robot. Every team will receive an award for participation.
