Power Up VR Simulator

So just for fun, I put together a simple simulator for FIRST Power Up for the HTC Vive in Unity. It uses the official field CAD, and the scale should be correct so that when you stand behind the driver stations, you should get a good idea about the visibility for each station. The scales and switches don’t work just yet, but you can pick up cubes and place them on surfaces and throw them around. I think it is really fun, and maybe in the near future I will add some more useful things to it, like the ability to make the scales work or have a game timer run and you can try to see how many points you can accumulate in a match period. Wow that looks really cool! Just out of curiosity is the CG for the cubes set similarly to a milkcrate or is it centered on the block?

We’ve been on and off working on a unity project as well, and I’m wondering how you got your field model looking so nice. We had shader texture problems like crazy in ours.

What cad did you use that already had all the textures?

Any chance you could make the Scale/Switches pivot? Might be useful for testing block loading scenarios.

Thanks really helps visualize the field hope someone has a vive might be good to have windows mixed reality version too as those headsets are cheaper for teams on budgets this is a great resource for teams to use.

Can you (or anyone) do something like this again for this year? I have a VIVE at home and would love to get some practice in. Different controllers, drives, etc would definitely be downloaded all over CD.

I just used the Solidworks CAD provided. It didn’t have any textures assigned to the parts, so I downloaded the decals on the field elements and then manually created textures for them and added them to each field component.

Ultimately my final goal is to make this into a full blown VR driving and game simulator, but that might take some time.

I’m going to try to get that done later in the season

Right now it is just centered on the block, but I’ll try to fix that this weekend.

Anyway to make the part of the scale translucent on the diagonal?

What file formats did you use to import it into Unity? We are trying to make a version in UE4 but cannot get textures working… Any tips?

can this be used in Google cardboard? I tried and have trouble. I have a VR headset, how can I use this?

One of the files Unity accepts is .fbx, which can be exported by Blender (free 3d modeling program. Blender also opens STEP files, which Autodesk provides of the field :wink: ) You can find a full list of what 3d model files Unity supports here.

Or the properly textured field? Doing it in blender with the Autodesk field has only given me issues…

Would it be possible for us to have the Unity project? We can’t seem to get textured .fbx files. We’re now planning to add the ability to draw like in Google Tilt Brush so we can create strategies in VR. Not that it’s needed but it would be fun.

Unfortunately, the amount of processing power that it takes to process all of the geometries for this simulator makes it unable to run on a Google cardboard or a Gear VR or something similar. Sorry :frowning:

I’ll try to get the project cleaned up a little bit and share it in case anyone wants to make their own version using this project. Hopefully I’ll have some time to do that this weekend.

Cardboard is only 3DoF (3 degrees of freedom and therefore not for walking tours)
