Powering pi 4b on Romi

I updated the raspberry pi on my Romi from a 3b Plus to 4b and started seeing these errors along with more beep/disconnect issues:
2023-02-19T22:06:56.970Z [ROMI] warn: Status byte is 0. Assuming brown out. Rewriting IO config
2023-02-19T22:06:58.985Z [ROMI] info: Firmware Identifier: 118

This sort of makes sense as I think the NiMH batteries deliver ~2A and the 4b steps up suggested power from 2.5A → 3A (relative to 3bPlus)

The user guide says not to power the pi via USB if getting power from the Romi board due to back feeding power through the pi. In that case is the best approach to stop powering the pi from the 32U4 board and use a 3A battery pack for the pi via USB?
