Hello!
We are trying to mount our CTR Mag Encoders on the Toughbox Mini - we 3d-printed spacer and placed it between the encoder housing and the output shaft.
But it seems our output shaft isn’t magnetic and our encoder doesn’t recognizes it, how can we solve this?
Thanks!
The KoP Toughboxes do not come with a magnet shaft. We (AndyMark) sell a magnetic shaft for this purpose. If you have the capability to do it yourself, you can lathe off the dowel, and drill the remainder out, and press in a new magnet instead of the dowel.
The CTRE mag encoders use their own magnets and are oriented to read the end of the shaft with the magnet embedded in it. This can be a bit difficult to do on a drivetrain shaft, since you can’t drill out the end of the shaft on the gearbox side and have no place to put the encoder on the end of the shaft on the wheel side. I would suggest that you try the CTRE Hex Bore Mag Encoder Housing that you can put on the output shaft. It’s much easier than trying to drill the shaft out (if you don’t have a lathe) and has the magnet built into the housing so it always has the proper orientation and distance from the encoder.
If you’re planning to install the magnet in your output shaft yourself, the directions start on page 11 of the User’s Guide:
Last year we had this issue, didn’t have access to a lathe and didn’t feel like spending more money and waiting for shipping on new axles.
With a little determination, you can pull the non-magnetic steel plug out of your shafts. You need to heat the axle red hot to expand it and loosen any locktight or whatever might be in there, and then twist and pull with what ever tools you have on the steel plug. A vice on the axle, and vice-grips on the steel plug worked for us.
Next, after it cools, drill out the hole to clean it up. Then insert the magnet that came with your CTRE Max Encoders. Be very careful with the magnets, do not hammer on them, they will shatter like glass. Make the hole large enough for them to easily slide in. Locktight or JB-Weld them if you need to fill in some slack.
It’s about 30 minutes of time after you get the axles out of your gearboxes.
