My team got an Acer Aspire E11 in the rookie kit of parts along with the USB image and I have looked up the tutorial for imaging the DS. However when I try to open the boot menu [F12] to boot from the USB nothing happens. After some internet research I found that sometimes you need to enable the boot menu in the BIOS, however when trying to open the BIOS [F2] once again nothing happened. Am I missing something or is there some other way to open the BIOS/Boot menu.
Things I’ve tried:
Pressing F12 at all the different phases of startup
Holding F12 throughout all of start up
Pressing F2 at all the different phases of startup
Holding F2 throughout all of start up
Repeatedly tapping F2 during POST
Copious amounts of googling
To activate the BIOS utility, press <F2> during the POST while the computer logo is being displayed.
I would say: Turn on the computer, and start pecking at the F2 key (repeatedly pressing it). Don’t hold it down. Keep pressing it about 5 times a second.
Many are F2 to enter BIOS Setup, Many are Press Delete Key…I will research the Acer Aspire E11 for you, there should be a short message before it enters or loads Windows…Look for “F2 or Delete to enter Setup.”
I’ve been helping a rookie team (6161) set up their Acer Aspire E11. We had the same problem - no boot menu with F12. We need to set it as an option in BIOS setup, but we were able to get into Setup with the F2 key on boot.
We still have problems, however. Now we get the boot menu with the F12 key, but the USB stick is not on the boot list, just the Windows C: drive. We downloaded the image files and created a new bootable USB stick, no luck. We also tried turning off secure boot. That same USB stick is discovered as a bootable USB HDD when I bring up a Lenovo IdeaPad with an F12 boot. It’s also discovered as bootable by my new MacBook Pro, for that matter.
One thing I haven’t tried is modifying the EFI boot setting in Setup.
Is anyone else having these problems? Can we use the Acer without re-imaging it?
Is there a way to access the BIOS menu while the computer is running?
I tried pressing Delete along with F2 and F12 during POST and the computer still refuses to do anything but boot normally. Is there anything special you need to do in windows.
Only if it came with a Utility to do it. Depending upon your version of Windows, look under PC Settings (control panel). It my be under Recovery (advanced settings).
In the recovery menu there was the option to do an advanced boot which after restarting gave me the option to boot from USB, however after seeming to work for a couple minutes a blue text box came up with the message that said “System doesn’t have any USB options. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu.”
I’m not sure if this has any effect on what I’m trying to do but do I have to activate windows first?
