After our 2017 season, our electrical lead student was annoyed by managing batteries during our team’s prototyping phase. Students would deeply discharge the batteries, and forget to charge them after using them. We also had a wire melting incident from an improper setup. So our electrical lead designed a test bench designed to be powered by an A/C wall outlet. It supplies 12V, up to 50A, and has variable speed and direction with voltage and current readouts for Scientific Method Approved Testing ™. This paper is an overview of common methods of powering prototypes as well as a design overview, parts list, and approximate instructions for how to build your own.
