PSA: Imgur will be deleting old photos

@Dracco and others are hard at work brainstorming on the TBA side of things. My understanding of the current status is that images that are currently on TBA are safe, but there isn’t necessarily a mechanism to continue serving them yet. As in, the pictures are in the box in the basement, but we don’t have an easy way to get down there and see them yet.

Yep, like @jaredhk mentioned, I have a backup of all of the Ingur media on TBA today, so nothing will be lost.

In the short term, any images deleted from Imgur’s side will 404 on TBA when they make the change, which isn’t great, but there’s already some older media out there with this issue, so it’s not going to break anything, just be a bit annoying.

As far as the future goes, I’ve been putting together a proposal for a long-term solution that seems likely to land on TBA hosting our own images. Aside from the cost of doing this, there’s also the development time to get things up and running. While this will be more work, it’ll allow us to better control our own destiny, as well as hopefully improve everyone’s experience.

Here’s a list of all the imgur urls I found on CD.

There’s only about 7000 links.

Below is the raw sqlite3 database I dumped the scrape into. It has the topic/post info for each link.
imgur.txt (820 KB)

Ready for round 2?

https://gfycat.com/ is shutting down on September 1. While I don’t expect this to have as much of an effect as Imgur, it’s still going to hurt.

These recent shutdowns and policy changes at social media companies remind me of why sites like CD are important - CD has been able to serve the community for over 20 years without issue because it exists as a service by and for the community rather than having to worry about making a profit or pleasing investors. There’s definitely risks that wouldn’t be present if CD were a part of a larger platform, but at the end of the day it means the final say of what happens with the site lies with its admins and moderators, rather than a company with differing interests from the site’s users.

And giphy is now owned by shutterstock

Imgur, Reddit, Twitter, Gfycat… all these major sites undergoing service degradation or cessation… the end times of the internet???*

*Obviously not, but this would make fantastic clickbait if any journalists are reading this.

IMO beyond the clickbait headlines this an actual problematic trend.

Just have @Koko_Ed go to ALL the events and take ALL the photos and upload ALL the photos to his Instagram
Gifycat is doing the same, though there’s much less of our content on there. I guess we need to get an account or move content over to a more solid platform like Facebook or Instagram ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You should ask him what happened to his photobucket account.

You mean the X-Cats photo album? I was never in charge of that.

Anyone want to get busy developing that cloning technology. They can just ship the clones in the trailer to events.
I had people DM me their robot pictures a couple of times. TBA was using my pictures for a while but then suddenly stopped. I have no idea why.
