Pulley System Gear Reduction/Torque Equations

Our team is looking into using brushless NEO motors to power a pulley system on our robot.
We were wondering if anyone has helpful resources/tips regarding any of the following:

  • torque equations
  • gear reduction
  • ideal height of the pulley system to control this year’s power cell (~7-inch diameter)

I can’t really help you with the third point. I suggest you check out the Open Alliance blogs or do some prototyping of your own.

For the first two points, you may find my design spreadsheet helpful.


Torque increases proportionally with gear reduction. Speed decreases proportionally with gear reduction. (you can use chains/sprockets or belts/pulleys to do the same thing, in lieu of gears).

If you sketch your “pulley system”, we might be able to understand what you have in mind, might be able to give helpful advice. But I really have no idea what you’re talking about.
