Question About the Distance in the Vision Processing example

I've read the NI white paper on Vision tracking, and I've been running the example included with LabVIEW.  However, when we run our camera to track example targets on the wall, the distances are different.

My understanding is that the distance outputted is the distance from the camera lens to the wall...but the distances for the different targets vary, which makes me wonder if the distance *d* is actually the distance from the camera to the center of a rectangle.

Can anyone confirm what the distance outputted by this example is measuring?

I’ve never done it but the way I assume it works is the program takes the size of the object and checks how far away you are by seeing how much smaller it is than the original size of the object.

In my experimentation with the out of the box vision software provided by National Instruments, the distance I measured correlated very well with the distance from the camera lens to the center of the rectangle.

If you select the wrong camera, your distances will be off.
