In autonomous mode, are there 3 specific locations where robots
must be placed, or can a robot be placed at the beginning of the match anywhere between the black tape and alliance wall?

The Alliance Wall diamond plate is shown in Figure 3-26 on page 31 as the large flat gray areas fronting the Player Stations.
You can set your robot anywhere on the field as long as it is contacting the alliance wall diamond plate as Mark stated.
Hmm… this would also mean that it is permissible to start inside your opponent’s feeder station (RETRIEVAL ZONE). If you are disabled or become disabled while touching your opponent’s RETRIEVAL ZONE, can your opponent continue to rack up fouls or is there a limit?
Would you consider it risky to start the match touching the RETRIEVAL ZONE?
It is a risky start and fouls will continue to rack up. Our team is going to avoid it.
To piggyback on what MarkMcLeod posted; there is no specific place along the diamond plate that any robot is restricted to or from.
