Questionable G301.e call (Entanglement with the ARENA)

At NEDCMP in Q87, we (246) received a tech foul for “entanglement with the ARENA”. It wasn’t immediately obvious to me what the call could have been for, so we went to the question box and the head ref confirmed that the call was G301 part e. Per the HR, we did not damage the field, and the call was purely G301.e.

Our intake gets caught on the lower cone node for <3 seconds while retracting. No part of the intake actuates or grabs the node, it is a simple collision. Here’s a timestamped Twitch link: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1787390030?t=2h53m19s (around 118 seconds remaining, red grid)

It seemed like an absurd call in the moment, and now that I’ve had time to cool down and review the footage, it still seems like an absurd call. Because it didn’t change the outcome of the match, we didn’t bother to push the issue any further, but it just rubs me the wrong way. What do you think?

Was this “entanglement” under G301.e?

There is no definition on “entangled” that fits what your robot did.

I think “entangled” was the wrong word to use.

You could argue the grab/grapple clauses more than entanglement. It does appear you pull on the cone node enough to lift the back end of the robot off of the ground.

Also can’t tell from the video, but a lot of times when I have seen that action performed this year, some of the zip ties holding the cone nodes in place have broken. If that happened, it could also be called field damage.
