My team has always used the old gyros from 2016, are there any newer gyros that work in a similar way? I have seen the NavX but I am not sure if the cost is worth it. Any teams that use it and suggest it?
We’ve been using this one for a few years, which is available through FIRST Choice:
The CTRE pigeon is an excellent option that can be wired straight into your can bus, or connected to a Talon SRX if you already have those in your system.
I believe it uses the same chip as the NavX.

My team has been Using the NavX since 2016 it hasn’t failed us yet. The pre-made library is also very helpful.
Our team also uses the Navx. We haven’t had to use all that much been it’s worked well when we’ve needed it. I’m honestly not sure if it’s worth the cost though. I’m sure the CTRE pigeon will do it just as well
There hasn’t been any major leaps in the sensor technology available to FRC teams since 2016 - The biggest thing is COTS sensor fusion devices (like the NavX) have gotten easier to use and at least a bit cheaper.
NavX is a good choice. I’m a big fan of the ADXRS453, which is just the KOP 450’s big brother - much better vibration rejection which leads to more accurate pose angle estimates.
This is the one my team has, we only have one that has been thrown around all over the place on all different roboRIOs testing autonomous.
