Quick rundown of what happens during autonomous

So there has been confusion among the programmers on what exactly we do during autonomous. Where does the robot start with respect to the driver and what tasks can be done to earn points? How are your own teams doing autonomous?

The robots are on the opposite side of the field from the driver station. So the robots start on the Initiation Line, on the side where they would score the Power Cells. Assuming the robot is facing the goal, the friendly trench will be behind and to the right of the robot.

Among the possible maneuvers would include moving off the initiation line, scoring the preloaded power cells, locating and retrieving power cells on the field. There are more options, but this ought to get you started.

Table 4-2 gives you some ways you can score points throughout the game.

The robot is going to start on the initiation line on the other side of the field. That means that during autonomous the other alliance robots will start directly in front of you and vice versa. As for scoring during autonomous, getting off the initiation line is 5 points right off the bat. From there you can score the 3 power cells you pre loaded, and pick up more as well.

Interesting, I just had this discussion yesterday with one of our programmers…I guess it’s not obvious

It’s programming’s fault

Read the fine manual… Section 4.2 and 4.4.5 specifically.

It makes me sad when questions like this arise at this stage in the season. Please understand, I am not trying to shame the OP, but the programmers should have been able to read the very fine manual by now and know these details, and if for whatever reason that missed something they should be able to search said manual and find the answer.

We require our student to read the game details sections (basically sections 1-8) and the sections relevant to what they are doing. We actually read and discuss the first 8 sections as part of kickoff weekend. We strongly encourage students to read the entire manual.

Even if you are part of a new and/or very small team, reading and understanding 60 odd pages is not a huge ask. The folks that are going to participate in the design and fabrication also really need to understand section 9 & 10. If they don’t your chances of fielding a robot are fairly small.

If you don’t understand something, by all means ask. CD is very supportive of new folks. But please Read the Fine Manual.
