Radio / barrel + POE failure, PSA

Our team has used a double power strategy with the radio for a number of years now, with good luck. That is, barrel connector in, and then a passive POE injector also feeding 12V into the first ethernet port on the radio.

We had a test chassis with the radio poorly secured and we were having comms issues. We discovered that the POE injection was no longer powering the radio, and what’s more, it was easy to wiggle the barrel connector to cause the radio to lose power.

None of our other 3 radios exhibit this, so we are hoping that it is just a broken radio. It was badly abused, so that would not be surprising.

The PSA part of this is that for teams that use this model, it’s probably worth a few minutes to make sure that the POE jack still powers the radio by itself.

The part I’m in denial about is the possibility that this configuration somehow causes this condition. I’m really hoping that’s not the case and if you have alternate evidence my response is likely to be lalalalalalal I can’t hear you and isn’t it nice we’re getting new radios next year  ?

Remember that for dual power to the radio, the two supplies must come from the same place, specifically the 12V/2A connections on the VRM. You cannot use dual power in combination with the RPM. Doing otherwise might damage components.

Also, when dealing with friction connections (the barrel jack and microUSB), avoid putting the connector on the bottom (gravity is not your friend), apply strain relief, and consider hot glue.

What about coming from the PDP? We are running the radio power module from one of the fused ports on the REV PDH. Do we need to Y that connection?

On strain relief: when you secure your radio cables down with cable ties, make sure that the direction they’re being pulled by those ties is pushing them into the port on the radio, not pulling them out.

+1 to hot glue. A small dot on your barrel jack and BOTH ends of your ethernet cable will hold them well.

Dual power is only possible with the VRM.
