I know it’s best to have the radio as high as possible but does orientation matter?

The plan right now is to mount it vertical on a 2x1 near the corner of the robot and have a sheet of lexan covering it because it is on the corner and has no protection from something entering from the outside

For the distances involved in a competition, no.

In theory, you want the internal antenna vertical for maximum range. What that is, I don’t know.
