Rainbow Rumble: The 3rd Symphony

The planning committee for the FIRST FRC Off-Season event focused on members of the LGBTQ+ Community is proud to present Rainbow Rumble: The 3rd Symphony!

This year, we will be on the road, visiting our friends, allies, and LGBTQ+ of FIRST partner team, The Argonauts at Troy Athens High School, in Troy, Michigan!

When:
Friday, July 26, 2024: Set up and Load In
Saturday, July 27, 2024: Qualification Matches
Sunday, July 28, 2024: Qualification and Playoff Matches

Who:
Anyone who is a member or ally of the LGBTQ+ community! You don’t need to be a member to compete, but you must be an ally to be there!

32 Robots at $300 per robot! $150 for 2nd robots, who will go on a waitlist subject to availability.

There will be scholarships available for rising seniors (Class of 2025), with more information on our website in April or May.

Team registration and volunteer sign ups will open in Late April/Early May 2024, keep an eye on this thread for more information.

Please note: After having a fairly successful streaming and social media policy in 2023, we will be continuing to make some updates for 2024, but fully intend to continue streaming and media in the future.

We will assess future rule updates based upon the game once details come out.

Thanks and we can’t wait to hear the symphony!

What is the reasoning for not being in Mason? Construction or just variety?

Construction unfortunately made Mason unavailable for RR this year.

Renovations and air conditioning being added to the robot room

Hey Y’all!

As promised, The Rainbow Rumble Planning Committee has completed our initial pass through for registration, volunteer sign-ups, and rule changes!

Team and Volunteer Registration can be found on our website, www.rainbowrumble.org

Our initial pass at rule changes include:

  • Video Review

  • Removal of Tech Fouls for AMP/SOURCE Zones if inadvertent or inconsequential contacts

  • Rainbow Bonus - Rainbow NOTES scored in AMP and put onto the grate next to the amp

  • STAGE Zone - Tape Line to move to the inside of truss

  • Pins will become Tech Fouls

  • MELODY RP will be at the DCMP level of 21 ->18 notes (Rainbow NOTES will still count toward MELODY)

Final wording for rule changes will be posted no later than 5/15/24.

Quick question, is there an age requirement for volunteering?

such as having to be over 18

Sounds really fun, but soooo far away :sob:

We plan of following the age requirements for roles set out by FIRST, with the absolute youngest being at 13.

Also, within 36 hours we have had 29 teams sign up for Rainbow Rumble 3! We also have 3 teams on the waitlist for second robots.

Should we get to 40 teams signed up before July 1, we will prioritize teams 1st robots off the waitlist before we bring in 2nd bots.

We will do our best to keep rainbowrumble.org up to date with the team list as best we can. It is a manual process though, so it may take a day or so to update at times.

Thank you!

Do you know what the makeup of the Rainbow Notes will be for the bonus RP? Any idea if they will be the same as regular notes or if they allowed to be shot normally at the speaker? Thank you!

Looking forward to being able to see the event in person this year!

We will do our best to source NOTES that are as close to the orange NOTE as possible. We understand that many teams may not be able to use them as easily, which is why we will do the best we can here. It is also why we are going with the bonus RP being via the AMP only.

If they get scored into the SPEAKER, we do believe they should still be scored as NOTES due to the set up of the field and the fact that the field uses beam breaks. However, they cannot be used for the Rainbow Bonus RP if they get scored into the SPEAKER as there is no easy way to access the NOTES scored in the SPEAKER mid match.

Has there been any consideration of teams who use color based object detection to acquire the notes from the ground. Where as this was less of an issue last year because sight lines didn’t prompt many teams to implement these sorta features, this season was the opposite and many teams rely on this function to efficiently collect notes.

Hey Guys, Gals, and Non-Binary Pals!

Tonight’s update will be a long one, and quite the doozy. We introduce our team list, judging updates, and our rule changes!

First and foremost: The Teams!

We on the committee are overwhelmed with the support Rainbow Rumble has received this year. We currently have 40+ teams registered as well as multiple teams looking to bring second bots if we have slots open up. We as a planning committee are currently discussing options, and if it makes sense space and event quality wise for us to increase our team count. Personally, I still can’t believe we filled to capacity within a week, and I am forever grateful and humbled by the support the FIRST community gives to our LGBTQ+ students. We know just how important being able to attend an event like Rainbow Rumble is to those in the LGBTQ+ community and want to make sure we can have the largest impact possible for our students. All teams who have registered should receive an email from the Planning Committee soon, if not already, regarding your registration status (Registered, Secured, or Waitlist). Please remember the $300 registration fee is due by 7/1/2024 or your slot will no longer be held. At that time, we will proceed with inviting waitlisted teams.

Judging Updates:

At Rainbow Rumble, we believe in giving back to our students as much as possible. Therefore, most of our fundraising efforts go to support the students directly with scholarship opportunities. We will be opening up the scholarship applications soon and would love to see every one of the Class of 2025 students apply for a Rainbow Rumble Scholarship! We have world class judges coming to the event who want to hear from and meet with your students!

New this year, we will have judged awards similar to an on-season FRC event. Our intent is to have some fun with these awards and not add additional stress to your students. We won’t be doing judging room interviews for the Judged Awards but will be looking at team and robot attributes, just like at an on-season event! We hope to have more information about these awards in our next team update!

The Rule Changes!

Any changes or additions to rules have been changed to italics in this update.

G423: SOURCE/AMP ZONE protection. A ROBOT may not contact (either directly or transitively through a GAME PIECE CONTROLLED by either ROBOT and regardless of who initiates contact) an opponent ROBOT if any part of either ROBOT’S BUMPERS are in the opponent’s SOURCE ZONE or AMP ZONE. Exceptions are granted for inadvertent or inconsequential actions as determined by the referee crew. Violation: TECH FOUL

VIDEO REVIEW:

During PLAYOFF matches only, any REFEREE call that would have a CARD issued, will automatically be subject to video review.

Every ALLIANCE will receive a VIDEO REVIEW CHALLENGE COUPON that may be used ONCE during PLAYOFFS, to review any instance of game play that a team feels should have had a CARD issued and was not. Teams must be prepared to give as much detail of the interaction as possible so that it can be easily found in the match, preferably with the team numbers of the teams involved, and approximate time in the match. The CHALLENGE COUPON must be given to the HEAD REFEREE prior to the start of the next ROUND of the Playoff MATCH Bracket as defined in section 11.7.2 of the CRESCENDO manual.

The HEAD REFEREE and any other REFEREES whom the HEAD REFEREE decides, shall review match video. The HEAD REFEREE will be the ultimate authority on any CARD issued, and must be able to determine with certainty that a CARD should either be issued or not issued, else the ruling on the field will stand. We, the planning committee, recognize that not every interaction will be fully visible in the video, and therefore will still be relying on the sight of the REFEREE team to ensure safe and fair play occurs. This is our attempt to reduce the number of CARDS issued during PLAYOFFS that can have a direct effect on who wins an event.

RAINBOW NOTE BONUS: The RAINBOW NOTE BONUS will be earned via the AMP, and RAINBOW NOTES. RAINBOW NOTE BONUS is scored at the end of the MATCH.

To score a RAINBOW NOTE BONUS, an ALLIANCE must score at least one of each color RAINBOW NOTE into the AMP, and place them in RAINBOW ORDER (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple) as viewed from the AUDIENCE side of the field. These NOTES are still NOTES for all intents and purposes of CRESCENDO. No NOTE can be moved from the SPEAKER to the AMP area for any reason, as it risks interfering with the automated scoring of the SPEAKER.

Both ALLIANCES are provided with 2 full sets of RAINBOW NOTES to score a RAINBOW NOTE BONUS, however only one will count toward the bonus. A RAINBOW NOTE BONUS will equal 5 points in PLAYOFF matches. A completed RAINBOW NOTE BONUS will only equal 1 RANKING POINT during QUALIFICATION matches.

In the interest of accessibility of all FIRST participants, RAINBOW NOTES will have the color written on them in a high contrast color permanent marker, and the grate area will also have the same markings on gaff tape.

FIGURE RR-24-1: Coming in the next Team Update

STAGE ZONE:

In an effort to reduce an abundance of G424 violations, Rainbow Rumble will be modifying the tape lines for the STAGE ZONE. The new tape lines will be on the inside of the Truss Legs, as shown in FIGURE RR-24-2

FIGURE 44-24-2:

G420 There’s a 5-count on PINS. A ROBOT may not PIN an opponent’s ROBOT for more than 5 seconds. A ROBOT is PINNING if it is preventing the movement of an opponent ROBOT by contact, either direct or transitive (such as against a FIELD element). A PIN count ends once any of the following criteria below are met:

A. the ROBOTS have separated by at least 6 ft. (~183 cm) from each other for more than 5 seconds,

B. either ROBOT has moved 6 ft. from where the PIN initiated for more than 5 seconds, or

C. the PINNING ROBOT gets PINNED.

For criteria A, the PIN count pauses once ROBOTS are separated by 6 ft. until either the PIN ends or the PINNING ROBOT moves back within 6 ft., at which point the PIN count is resumed. For criteria B, the PIN count pauses once either ROBOT has moved 6ft from where the PIN initiated until the PIN ends or until both ROBOTS move back within 6ft., at which point the PIN count is resumed.
Violation: TECH FOUL, and for every 5 seconds in which the situation is not corrected, 2 TECH FOULS are assessed.

G429 NOTE delivery. A NOTE may only be introduced to the FIELD through the SOURCE. RAINBOW NOTES will be in the SOURCE for first introduction into the field.
A RAINBOW NOTE (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue or Purple) if re-introduced via the modification of G430, is not a violation of this rule. Violation: TECH FOUL.

G430 HIGH NOTE delivery. A HIGH NOTE may only be entered on to the FIELD during the last 20 seconds of the MATCH by a HUMAN PLAYER in front of the COACH LINE. Any NOTE previously scored in the AMP may be entered onto the FIELD during the last 20 seconds of the MATCH by a HUMAN PLAYER in front of the COACH LINE, and scored on a MICROPHONE for a SPOTLIGHT. Reminder: the RAINBOW NOTE BONUS will be scored at the end of the MATCH and teams are recommended to avoid using RAINBOW NOTES that are needed for the RAINBOW NOTE BONUS.

SPOTLIGHT a scoring achievement for a HIGH NOTE , RAINBOW NOTE, or NOTE on a MICROPHONE. Note: While it is not the intent of the Rainbow Rumble Planning Committee to allow for a ROBOT to complete the updated SPOTLIGHT scoring achievement, we recognize that this may occur during the course of normal game play during the MATCH. We will count a SPOTLIGHT that occurs due to this as a SPOTLIGHT.

RAINBOW NOTE a Gopher Sport Rainbow Foam Ring, in Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple. We will be using the regular Orange NOTES from CRESCENDO to act as the Orange NOTE for the RAINBOW NOTE BONUS.

MELODY: a scoring achievement in which an ALLIANCE has at least 21 (18 if Coopertition Bonus) AMP & SPEAKER NOTES. This includes RAINBOW NOTES.

Parker,

Sorry for not responding to you about this earlier. As we did last year, we wanted to make sure we were able to secure the rainbow game pieces prior to releasing information about them. In my update above, I did link the RAINBOW NOTES that we will be using, and hope that can assist.

While we recognize that some teams use vision to help assist their pickups, unfortunately we cannot account for that beyond releasing the information as early as we could. Hopefully this can help those teams using vision for NOTE tracking purposes.

I’d like to clarify btw that this will probably have absolutely zero impact on scoring or gameplay tbh, specially as there will only ever be I think 20 on the field at any given time (5x2 per team), but still I thought it was interesting to look at their properties side by side.
What I came up with is listed below

Note Outer Diameter Interior Diameter Height Weight
Crescendo 14" 10" 2" 8.3oz
Rainbow 14" 10.5" 2" 9.2oz

the only place I could see this making a difference is in long range shots, if teams are just barely making it in I could see the arc of the shot being a bit quicker to drop due to less contact surface on the wheels and them being 0.9oz heavier.

to be honest though again the teams that are shooting from that far out usually are already shooting the note with such power that the slight change wont make too much of a difference.

Warning: Physics

Given the higher mass and larger interior diameter of the Rainbow note, its rotational moment of inertia (I) will be higher than that of the Crescendo note. The moment of inertia can be calculated as I = 1/2 M (r_1^2 + r_2^2), where M is the mass, r_1 the outer radius, and r_2 the inner radius. A higher I means that, under the same amount of torque τ, the angular acceleration α will be lower, as given by the equation τ = Iα. Therefore, the same torque will result in slower rotational speed for the Rainbow note compared to the Crescendo.

For teams that shoot the note straight without spinning, the impact of increased mass is significant according to Newton’s Second Law, F = ma, where F is the force applied, m is the mass, and a is the acceleration. Since the Rainbow note is heavier, the same force will produce less acceleration, a = F/m, implying that it will reach a lower speed compared to the lighter Crescendo when the same force is applied. This difference in acceleration could affect the note’s reach.
