Rare feat?

A rookie team at Northern Lights Regional was on the winning alliance team. Is this a rare feat for a rookie team? Any idea, on average, how many rookie teams win a regional each year?

I wouldn’t say its rare… Yeah it’s uncommon, but not rare by any means. I guess it depends on the district you are in though…

Here are all the rookies with event wins this season:

Usually what happens is a rookie team is selected as a second pick or as a back-up robot. Successful rookie teams specialize heavily on the objective(s) they can meet most proficiently. Sometimes they meet the specialized needs of an alliance of heavy hitters.

It is very rare, though, to see a rookie team be the captain or first pick of a winning alliance.

Strangely enough, I dont think a rookie team has won an Indiana event (be it regional or district event) in a very, VERY long time (someone correct me if I’m wrong).

Is it rare for a rookie team to win all 3 rookie awards in a year (RAS, Rookie Inspiration, and Highest Rookie Seed)? 6325 got that at the end of our second district event.

Kettering 2 decided not to award Rookie Inspiration since there was only one rookie team and they were the alliance captain of the winning alliance so they got the win, RAS, and Highest Rookie Seed.

Well when you don’t get very many rookies each year it’s a bit more challenging. Last I can remember is 2014 crossroads regional where 5188 won.

But that wasn’t an Indiana event, was it?

Terre Haute, IN

My team did it in 2009 (our rookie year), although not at the same event.

On TBA it doesn’t show 5188 playing in elims. Did they have to be subbed out the whole time?

Quarterfinal 3-1
Quarterfinal 3-2

They were subbed out for match 3.

Nice! I do not think it is possible to receive it all in the same event because if your Inspiration you do not get All Star and vice versa.

Since 2010, the following teams have won all 3 rookie awards in a single year:

I am fairly new and did a search but still don’t understand. What is Rookie All Star award? Is that given only at certain events as I hadn’t heard of that award before?

It’s potentially given out at every District or Regional event but Judges can decide not to hand it out. Teams can also only receive it once per season. It’s a ticket to Worlds at a regional.

Celebrates the rookie team exemplifying a young but strong partnership effort, as well as implementing the mission of FIRST to inspire students to learn more about science and technology.

As there are often far fewer rookie teams than veteran teams present at events, Judges have the option of not presenting this award if they feel no rookie team competing meets the criteria.

The only way I know of for a rookie to win all three is winning the RAS at one regional, then the Rookie Inspiration Award at another. If there’s only one rookie at a competition, or only one deserving of either of those two, then only one is given out. It would be interesting to know how many of the triple award rookies won the RAS at their world’s divisions?

We had a pretty successful first year last year.
We won highest rookie seed and rookie inspiration at our first event and then RAS at our second event. We then won our third event as the first pick of the 3rd alliance. Then we seeded 1st at PNW district champs. At world’s we ranked 4th in Curie and received RAS and highest rookie seed. I may be wrong but we might be up there for most awards won in a rookie year. I am very proud of our team we set high goals for ourselves and work our butts off to achieve them.

4 teams have done this since 2010.
