Regional inscription system

Hello,

My team and I are looking to register in the long island regional event.
Do you guys know why there is only twenty spots appearing available on the frc season event list ?
Is there just twenty teams participating to the competitions ?
Do local teams have a reserved spot unappearing on the website ?

This is a bit of a long answer, but ALL regionals have fewer spots posted then the actual capacity of the event. Typically about 10 spots are held back by the regional director–might be more, and in this case it probably is more. Those reserved spots are for late registering teams, or teams known to be having issues, or for extra waitlist options.

Local teams do not have a reserved spot per se–however, they may end up in one of the reserved spots if they fit one of the above categories or can talk to the regional director.

I would assume more than 20 teams.

My guess is that this season there are several spots that will open up but you are going to have a tough time because there is only ONE Long Island regional this year. Typically it has hosted 2 back to back regionals, but I’m not sure why that changed this year.

20 spots are open for all teams.
Additional reserved spots are for local teams and for late registering rookie teams.

The LI event will have 48 teams altogether.

Mark, any info on why only 1 LI event this year? Venue availability?

Cost.
Sponsors have remained steady, but expenses have continued to rise.

Bummer, hopefully that is not too tough on area teams, even with the return of Hudson Valley.

Inadvertently this keeps a certain number of spots for more geographically close teams (although in reality it’s more “regional director” closeness) not that there has been a huge issue in modern FRC of local teams not being able to get into their closest event^. Although this system is one of those “FRC knowledge” things that rewards teams that know the system and is frustrating or punishing for those who don’t.

^ exclusive of teams that go to multiple events and place their “home” event REALLY low on the preferences.

thanks guys ! Appreciate it !

I don’t know why FIRST doesn’t just start this process by sending every team:

Event XXXX, dates ddd-ddd is your closest event,
do you want to reserve a spot?

and then go on to let teams preference on the remaining slots.

Probably because for some events, there are more teams that are closest to the event than there are spots available.

Sure, in areas where there is a density of teams and regionals it could be “your assigned home regional” rather than “your closest regional”.

With the current system and our scheduling constraints, we end up not preferencing our “home” regional (the only one in our state, which is still >100 miles away) in the first round in hopes of getting a workable second regional (within 500 miles on a week we can travel) But it just feels like playing with fire to me and that some year we’re going to get burned.
