But, you probably are wondering ‘How many points to you get when someone gives you one Thumbs-Up?’
Here are the point fomulas: (numbers subject to change)
Admins (maybe mods, not sure) give 3 points.
For every 100 number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
For every 500 number of posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
For every 100 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
User must have 50 posts before his reputation hits count on others.
User can give 47 reputation clicks over each 24 hour period.
User must give reputation to 15 people before they can hit the same person again.
10 - Has reconized that FIRST is good.
50 - Mentor
150 - Really involved Mentor
1000 - Wants to be like Ken L
1500 - The Next John Abele
2000 - Changing the world
5000 - Andy, Joe, Dave and company
Wetzel
Orange is better.
Purple is better then no orange.
So is that every 100 days registered, you get 1 point to hand out? Or you are handing out 2 points after 200 days? If so is this retroactive? So for example, I joined in Sep 2001, 800ish days ago, and have 700 odd posts. Would that mean I have 9 points to hand out, or that each thumbs up I give is weighted to 9?
Perhaps I will attempt to browse the vB site again and figure it out. (thems confuuusing)
{Edit}
“Whenever someone rates a post either x reputations points is subtracted or added to the reputation total. That x is called reputation altering power. So when a 2 year old member rates someone it has more influecne then a new user rating the same post.”
If I may, perhaps make the reputation thing a little big more obvious… took me a while to find that small green/red/gray box… I think if someone is respectable, he deserves more than 5x5 green pixels.
I suppose this is what this whole “title” issue is about, but does this also mean that our custom titles are going to be replaced with reputation titles? Or is a person going to have two titles - one his custom one and one his reputation title? If the former, I’d hope the custom title option wouldn’t be eliminated, in which case, you should make the reputation graphic much more obvious than 5x5 pixels. Either way, can you haxor VB to put a small link next to the reputation title to a thread explaining the reputation idea (or atleast to a bookmark on the New Forum thread)? I’m thinking a simple (?) after the reputation title could clear up lots of confusion that many people will undoubtedly have with this system.

Oh, and for the -10 User has a little shameless behaviour in the past, wouldn’t “has had a little shameful behaviour in the past” make more sense?
As your reputation goes up, there are more & more dots. I forget the total # but it will begin to take shape eventually.

The titles show up when you mouseover the little dots. The #'s don’t show up in the reputation title… I just threw them there so we knew what the scale was. Also, the word ‘User’ is replaced by the username, I believe.
And, as with everything else, this could all change and become alot more intuitive, clearer and better with the final vb3 style. I won’t be changing much of anything until a final style is out to base stuff off of.
Personally, I think we shouldn’t have a named raking since if we use names, people would feel insulted/left-out, and other times it might not actually resemble how the person really is. I think a simple number is good enough. I’d say have the level’s be every 50 points, so a level 5 person would have 250-299 reputation points. It’s easier since you can compare it to others and you won’t have to learn a crazy naming system, specially for newbies.
i like the whole reputation idea … forces you to think about your posts … and plus it lets you know if someone has actually read and paid attention to your posts or not (ive always wondered that) …
but i have a question, and i might just be missing something here … but how do u give someone reputation points ??
hmmm… here’s a thought… for the extremely ego-sensitive people out there, how about one’s reputation being displayed in the top bar with the Last Visited and the Number of Private Messages?
That and I kinda mentioned it in my last post, but it was lost in the other points… can the individual dots be linked to a thread explaining the reputation system? I’m sure someone (either now or in the future) isn’t going to know what those dots are, and the person is only going to be really confused when “so-and-so is on a distinguished path” pops up on a mouseover. If they were linked, I’m sure it’ll get rid of the occassional “What are those green dots people have” thread.
There isnt anything built in to see all reputation (given or received). I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to make a page to display all of that. I’m going to work on our ChiefDelphi stuff (papers, gallery, ufh, etc), and hope that someone else makes a hack to do those things in the meantime, though.
If someone has 49 posts and goes around stirring up a reputation storm, nothing they do will matter. If they post once more and reach 50, will all of the reputation they handed out previously come into effect, or is it just forgotten for all time?
is there a way to see how many reputation points some one else has ?? i know that you can see what category they fit under ? and, how many points does it take to get a second dot and a third and so on??
i saw that, but some people who will become famous enough have two green dots while others have only one, so i was wondering if maybe this was a mistake, or if there are different ranking levels for the number of dots ??
