Jessica’s post:
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/wwwboard/messages/.2001/2617.html

The reason I post this on top instead of responding is because I feel this is really important for everyone to look at this. Anyways, here is my respond to Jessica’s post:

I agree totally with Jessica here… these days, I look at the forum, there are so many new posts everyday that I am having a hard time keep track of posts. It is nice to have off topic discussion, but sometimes too many of them kind of defeat the purpose of this forum. I am saying “kind of” because I don’t think OT should be completely off this place. This is a place for team bonding, and OT is a good way to show your personality and other interesting things about teams. We see lots of that after the 6-weeks period.

But right now, we all should try to keep our discussion more about information related to the competition. A lots of useful info are exchanged through this place, like rules, tips of the robot, technical info… etc. There is a reason why this site receive so many hits/day, and that’s because it is extremely helpful to rookie teams as well as returning teams. And these kind of discussion are not boring, but sometimes really important to teams who are asking the same question out there trying to figure something out while some great tips are already here. Sometimes it is even critical make sure teams got to look at the discussion happening here because it might be a major topic that will have a huge impact in the competition.

In order for this forum to be helpful, we should keep this place efficient, that means having clear, right to the point discussion about different aspect of the competition. If you notice recent posting, lots of them are asking about discussion from a while ago. This is happening because there are so many new posts that this page is forced to store old post into archive, instead of presenting the valuable discussion between other people. I am sure couples of people are already tired to repeat posting the same topic a few time a week. And this is not right to drain their energy because those people are volunteering their time and effort to help other people out. Let’s make their life a little easier… and not take advantage of them.

All I am asking is for people organize what they want to post in this forum, have a clear title so people can understand what they are going to read, and make sure you post in the right section. Sometimes it is intimidating just looking at a discussion where a person posts a question, and there are 10 responds after the question is posted 1 hour later. And all those responds have the same title: Re:, and then there will be more responds treads after that with title: re:. It makes me really tired of even trying to figure what’s going on while never have the time to read everything, and I am reluctant to post because I don’t want to post anything people already said.

Please seriously consider what I am saying. I did not post to be mean or to hurt anyone, much less trying to yell at people or intimidating them with my loud opinion. There is a reason why I said all these, and I am just trying get the people thinking…

Well, speaking of keeping stuff on topic. Just kidding there. Perhaps we can arrange to keep all the off-topic stuff, to say, the Rumor Mill. That way those of us who enjoy random postings (and that sometimes includes myself) can post there and those of us who prefer FIRST related topics can stay in the General and Tech Forums (also sometimes myself – depends on my mood). Best of both worlds?

People can post whatever they want… but it only becomes an issue of “sifting” if people respond to EVERY message… if even just to say “what was the point of this”

Personally, yes… there are some things that shouldn’t be posted… or you can just email between your friends or teammates for that matter…

However, we’ve kept “off the topic” discussion to the rumor mill… and it’s simply because our messages are a mix of truth and a little fun… cause that’s what this whole thing is about FUNNNNNN! People should be having it… and if they can laugh about a hampster-powered 12-wheel drive system… that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a 12-wheel drive system or aren’t saying something of value… it just means we also value “anti-stress” fun that can be found in the competition…

So if you don’t think a post is of any “value” then don’t respond to it… you don’t have to respond it every message…

Or if you have a problem with what someone posts that much, email them and say “hey, how come you keep posting about this”… and they will tell you why…

I’ve been on these forums for many years now (forever it seems)… and I’m glad to see it grow so much… but the more people, the more opinions or “perspective” on importance or the correct use of the forums you get…

Expect no less with growth… expect the same in FIRST and the world as a whole… it’s the way it all works

aye, if this were a moderated forum wherein the CD people explicitly said ROBOT ONLY threads…then perhaps we’d have more order in here.

Unfortunately that is not the case.

I do agree that let us try to maintain some kind of order here and not to have so many random posts all around.

I must say however that unless you run the site, posting a demand of what you want posted is rather… dictatorial? It is a public forum and we all should try to maintain some kind of order with regard to posting in the right places. But as to what to post, if you do not like the topic thread, dont reply guys.

On the other hand, if you want to post something, a question, a bright insight, or even a funny joke to you, then POST A NEW thread and see if people find it interesting enough to reply.

Otherwise, it’s rather controlling and rude to tell people that you do not like what they are posting.

It’s funny that every year this becomes an issue. Usually it happens to those who call this place “home” and find that they’re home is actually the public marketplace.

Bottom Line:

post anything you want. read whatever u want. just maintain clean and uncluttered… and within topic.

Rumor=fun,stupid,rumors,etc.

general=anything robotics related that’s general info

tech=robotic design/building technical questions and solutions

capish?

I am sorry, people. I never intended to tell people how to do things, much less demand how people should post.

It’s just that these days sometimes I see people asking the same kind of questions multiple times, and because the people with answers are tired of repeating the same answers, the discussion about those questions aren’t as exciting as they should… That kind of seems cold hearted to new commers who deserve/expect interesting discussion on this board, while all they got are answers like “a while ago we talked about this, and the answer is…”

I’ve always respected whatever topics you all posted on here, and usually I think they are just fun to read and relaxing. And colleen is right, this place IS growing really fast, which means much more increasing of messages. I personally think that’s a great thing too. I never oppose anyone for posting more messages on here, and I never will. I just want to make sure this forum won’t be overwhelmed by the increasing number, and also want to make sure newcommers don’t miss out the actions that usually happens in here.

One more thing, people, please feel free to correct me about things… sometimes I act immature and went right ahead saying things without thinking much, and I really will appreciate it if you all help me out a little bit.

I am sorry for my action, and I thank you for all the help you are going to offer.

There is a balance that has to be struck.

Honestly, it is getting to be a chore to get through all the messages on the site. I try to read every message, but I am running out of time and if I steal any more from my sleep, I may just fall asleep typing this message.

There is a range of fun vs. business messages. When the balance gets too far toward the fun side of the balance, the board gets to be hard to use. When it gets too far to the business end, nobody comes because it is sooo dry it puts folks to sleep.

My preference is somewhere in the 20-80 (fun-business) range, especially on the General and Tech Help Forums.

To my way of thinking, we have wondered far afield from the ideal mix.

But, this is an open Forum and I am not really interested in becoming everyone’s online nanny.

So… …what to do? I will tell you that we are very serious about doing something. But, the what is still not finalized.

I would appreciate suggestions. In the mean time, we will have to depend on gracious professionalism.

Joe is right…this board has become one of the most important segments of the FIRST program. We all love it, but at this time we SHOULD be fighting the clock but wading through some of those messages is rough. It is at the point where many of the posts are ignored because the author just posts useless stuff. (I might now get added to that list)

A new section could be added maybe for those who have the time to spend that way. My team has almost stopped reading this board because of the clutter. Let us make better use of our time now and save the 60% fun stuff for MAY - December. IF you turn off more people to this board, there will be no one here to read your posts but you…talking to yourself is no fun.

My Dear Doctor,

A suggestion… Get rid of the stats. I’m not sure it will have any effect but you never know…

I completely agree with you too, it has gotten to the point where I just decide not to read many of the posts , but then I worry that I am missing something important in here. I think the best option would be to start a new board possibly for Gossip or something.

I agree with you Jason, I’ve started only skimming topics to find things on topic or of some interest. Though I don’t know how much a new forum will help this. The one thing I have noticed is that things seem to seep over from one forum to another… tech stuff appears in general at times, rumors start on tech or in general…etc. We need a way to focus the posts for sure, but I’m not sure a new forum will help that completely…

I think you’re definitely right about this topic… i try to post only things that my team asks me, or things that i’m wondering at the time(my remote control car question)… other than that, im not really just going around posting whatever comes to my mind. I dont think people should be replying to posts after the person who posted the question has already gotten an answer, if it’s a question like “what is this part called”… That just clutters up the board with useless info, i mean, it’s already on the other post! I do appreciate everything that people on here do for me though, they’ve helped me find tons of answers i wouldn’t find elsewhere… thanks, but guys, try to keep it organized
