The day 3 recap of the 2025 RI3D season is out! We made major strides in our systems and programming. We got our parts cut out on the water jet, and they are now being assembled! Check it out here:
I am on the team and one thing I’d like to mention that wasn’t covered in any of our update videos or walkthrough was our idea for this robot to complete the deep climb - we came up with a similar idea to the one Penn State Ri3D ended up implementing, where we would lower our intake all the way to the lowest point in order to knock the deep cage into the bay of our robot through and into the gap in our algee ramp, and then push down on it to pull it down through the center of the robot. The main reason we didn’t end up pursuing this idea and implementing it was due to the amount of time we estimated it would take as we had already installed all of our electronics in the area we would have done this, and programminig needed that to stay implemented for mecanum drive testing.

Good question, in this case we had actually just considered deep cage to be out of scope for our robot within our first 2 hours of deciding the initial robot vision, and thus didn’t see this as a tradeoff with mecanum drive and proceeded with that drivetrain change. I’d like to clarify that we absolutely could have done both macnum drive and this deep climb idea at the same time mechanically, but it was much more the timing - we only had this idea at the beginning of day 3 iirc and didn’t think that was enough time remaining to change the electronics and develop the mechanical side as well.
We beleive mecanum drive was very useful to the design of our robot in this case when swerve wasn’t available to us, the extra menuverability was super helpful for the reef. I think in most cases you don’t have to trade off this drivetrain change for deep cage, but mecanum drive definitely didn’t help us score 12 more points during teleop so maybe consider that the biggest factor here
