ro8-n versus ro8-o

Could someone explain how this two rules coexist? GDC answered the question but i still don’t get it. Drawings would be helpful and type slowly. I’m old.

N. BUMPERS may extend beyond the BUMPER PERIMETER by up to a maximum of 3-1/2 inches per side. “Hard” parts of the BUMPER (i.e. plywood backing, fastening system, and clamping angles) may extend up to a maximum of one inch beyond the BUMPER PERIMETER. Only “soft” parts of the BUMPERS (i.e. pool noodles and cloth covering) may extend more than one inch beyond the BUMPER PERIMETER.

O. The BUMPER backing must not extend beyond the “edge” of the ROBOT. The backing of adjacent BUMPER segments must not attach to each other if the attachment would require that the joint extend into the corner (see Figure 8 – 4).

N is talking about the bumper extending out from the robot on the side it’s attached to.

O is talking about the end of the bumper backing not extending past the edge of the robot on the side adacent to the one that the bumper is attached to.

I’m sorry ,all i keep seeing is N lets you over lap plywood and O doesn’t. Sorry again ,i didn’t see drawing. That clears it up.

N lets you put the plywood on the side of the robot, O keeps it from going past the end of the robot into the corner.

edit: Ok, glad to help!

We had the same question a few days ago, took us a while to figure it out. glad we weren’t the only ones.
