RobBayer.com

Alright, so the way I’ve been hosting my website for the past 2 years just fell through, and as of this Friday, robbayer.com is homeless. I own the domain for the next year or so, but as for actual webspace, it’s all disappearing. I have one potential new host lined up, but I would doubt if I’ll be able to make the transition by Friday. Thus, robbayer.com will be down for a while.

Just letting everyone know!

Man, this stinks…:frowning:

Just curious though, shouldn’t this go in the Website Design/Showcase board, or Chit-Chat?

It should go in the forum that it is most relevant to. The point of his website is to provide relevant information and programs to programmers, which is why it belongs here. It’s not a team’s site (and he’s not asking for help with it), and it’s certainly not off-topic, which is why it doesn’t belong in the website or chit-chat forums.

Rob, have you checked with inspiration foundation to see if they could host it?

Ok, I was just asking.

I’m pretty sure if IF doesn’t, someone around here might. If I ran a server, I’d gladly let you use some of my space for a bit.

Well, technically, you could use the domain and forward it to another url and I think it automatically makes it so the users can’t see where it’s at. Check that out, if that’s so, I can give you space on the ComBBAT website and upload your files and you can redirect to a directory on there. Tell me what you think.

My friend showed this to me today, seems like a good deal for three years of webspace. I’m going to sign up for it, if anything to see what happens. Seems to be a good deal, but look for yourself.

I think it’s called a pointer, but I’m not sure. I could also allow some space for the programs on team 5’s server if you wish. Our engineer/programmer really likes your programs (same as me), so I don’t see why he’d say no.

That’s domain forwarding/pointing/masking (different places call it different things…). The thing is because of the way DNS works, you can’t just say “Hey…go over here to this page.” You’d have to set up a virtual host on the server it’s being pointed to, etc etc. There are services like DynDNS (www.dyndns.org) and DNS2GO (lost the link :() that you can type in “go to <address> or <ip>” and it will do so. Basically what they do is setup a virtual host for you then redirect to another ip or url when you tell them to. Useful if you’re hosting on a connection that changes your ip address a lot.

Hope this clears that up…

PHP Web Hosting seems to be a very decent host. I have friends who have had lots of great experience with them, and my team very recently signed up with them for our team site’s hosting.

Sorry about posing a solution when you weren’t asking for help, but I just thought I’d mention this.

Talk to me if thinks fall through with your other possible hosting, it’s very likely I can put you on some space I have access to. I have 3GB space, 30GB bandwidth… if it won’t use too much (aka about, 50mb space, 1/4GB-1/2GB per month… if it uses more talk to me…).

We are technically flagged on our account as a reseller of space, so we have no licensing issues. Anyways, if your other thing falls through lemme know.

We must not think like this…it’s gonna bring down every programmer here.

But yea, even if no one else can host the files, chief delphi can (white papers).

Heh, well, it’s not a problem with hosting, I’ll host in a heartbeat. I also have a personal webserver with unlimited bandwidth that I don’t do anything with he could put it on for the time being. So, whatever Rob wants to do, it’ll work out in the end  Too many people support his work for it to go away lol.

Whoa! I can’t begin to describe how happy I am to see all the offers of space, servers, etc! I’ll be finding out in the next few days whether this other thing is gonna work or not, but in the meantime, thanks again to everyone for the offers!

Alright, so I checked out the http://www.1and1.com site that Ian recomended and it looks amazing! I’ve updated all my DNS stuff and uploaded the site to their servers, so as soon as the DNS entry propogates to your ISP, robbayer.com should work just fine. Hopefully, the transfer will finish by Friday when the old server goes down.

Please let me know what the “catch” is to that 1and1 program. There is no way that can totally be for real but I haven’t found the catch. Are there ads or something? I really want to know why they are giving this away and how they can afford to. Thanks.

I looked at that site a few weeks ago. My guess is that since you get 3 years free… by that time you’ll forget all about it, then be getting an expensive bill each month. But I can’t really find anything on it, but it’s gotta be too good to be true.

I actually read the entire User-Agreement. The only thing I could find is if you run over your 5 GB (the agreement says 6 GB) bandwidth limit. Then after it’s only $0.99 per GB so it’s nothing big.

If your website dies, just cancel your account. It seems pretty simple…
