I have 2 ROBO rio 1’s that are broken and need repair. I asked National instruments and andymark to see if I can get them fixed. National Instruments said that the serial numbers are expired and couldn’t really help because they were purchased through andymark. one can’t image the other has a broken USB-B port on it. any. places to send them to to get fixed?
Thanks Oakville Dynamics 8719 coding captain.
I’m not sure about the USB port, but someone on here might be able to send you the recovery file that fixes the “can’t image” issue if NI won’t do it.
That being said, are you sure you got ahold of the FRC support people at NI? This is the first I’ve heard of them denying support because of an expired warranty and being bought from AndyMark, which is the only place to get them at the FRC team price as far as I know.
I have not got in touch with the FRC People at NI how would I be able to get a hold of them? thank you so much for the help
Expanding on Bob post. The only support for frc Rio is through the support forum on the ni website. The regular CS doesn’t know what to do with FRC Rios.
Post to the NI forums:

thank you very much!
If you don’t get traction on those forums, message me and I’ll poke people to make progress.
Not somewhere to get it fixed, still pursue the links posted by others above.
But what specifically is broken? There’s several ways they can break ranging in fixes from you could possibly do it yourself without avoiding any warranty to, crack it open if you get nowhere with support and desolder the old connector and replace it yourself voiding any warranty.
If they don’t get anywhere with support, I’d much rather they poke me and I’ll make sure they get somewhere with support than that option.
I agree hence why I said follow up on the other links. However as the OP noted in the other thread I shared, in the end they were asked to pay $400 + shipping to have that USB replaced. That’s just about as much as a new one. If that’s what following through with support gets them to then I don’t see what poking you will do to change that portion. Not having done the process with NI myself idk if that’s true, but if it is I’d much rather do it myself and save that funding for the team.
Worst case if the repair didn’t work we’d have to buy a new one for the same price and it would be a new 2 rather than an old refurbished 1. In that situation the latter option seems like the optimal solution with minimal risk to adding to the cost, while having the highest payoff potential in savings.
If you are willing to take the risk and know someone who can desolder the old port and solder the new one you can buy a new port from Digikey.
The OP in the other thread went through paths other than those support forums. I promise the poster in this thread won’t be asked to spend that.
If I’m poked here, I’ll be reaching out directly to the folks on the support team to make sure it’s moving smoothly and without those extra asks. (Full disclosure, I work for NI)
I know the process isn’t always the most obvious. I’ve tried numerous times internally to make it smoother. It’s part of why I watch these forums.
FWIW, I don’t see a post that’s obviously matched to the OP at the moment but I’m trying to look out for it.
So how much would this cost?
So what’s actually broken is the interior was ripped out in a match and has been broken ever since.
Thank you
This is definitely true, unfortunately.
Considering OP says they reached out to AndyMark, and then also later said they didn’t know how to contact the FRCFIRST Robotics Competition specific customer service at NI, I’m curious what it is AndyMark is telling customers when they reach out seeking help with a damaged/malfunctioning roboRio…?
It sounds as though customers are being told to:
Contact NI customer service
Instead of:
Contact NI’s customer service department that specifically deals with FIRST teams, by following the instructions provided below
And then actually providing the relevant instructions for how to contact NI on their FIRST specific forums.
Note I have not needed to communicate with NI or AndyMark anytime recently regarding the repair of a roboRio, and I amAndyMark making a lot of assumptions given the info at hand.
With that being said, @Andy_Baker or anyone else from AndyMark, can you mention what the current policy/response is to teams that reach out to your company looking to service their roboRio?
When I’ve heard from AndyMark, they’re pointing towards those forums. Andy Baker and his team are a huge help for us in mitigating some of that confusion.
The webpage for the RoboRio 2 also directly points to the specific forums when you scroll down. Besides putting it as a sticker on the bottom of the unit itself I don’t know how much more Andymark could do.
1.81$ for the port.
This may sound a bit weird but where could I ship the Rio to to get the port soldered?
