Robot starting Config, 84 inches?

Can a robot start at 84 inches? I know that they cannot go to the other side of the field but assuming they are this tall for defense they may stay by the opponent’s loading station anyway. I’m thinking for teams that may be a 3rd round pick and slap a pvc pipe that cannot be retracted to their bot.

3.3.5 ROBOT Actions
G22 ROBOT height (as defined in relation to the ROBOT) must be restricted as follows during the MATCH:
A. If in contact with the carpet in its AUTO ZONE and/or its PYRAMID, ≤ 84 in.
B. Otherwise, ≤ 60 in.

R4 In the STARTING CONFIGURATION, no part of the ROBOT may extend outside the vertical projection of the FRAME PERIMETER, with the exception of minor protrusions such as bolt heads, fastener ends, rivets, etc.

As I read those rules if the robot is in the autozone to start (obviously it is) and it does not extend outside the vertical projection (so 84" straight up would be allowed) then this robot would not be allowed to cross the auto line but is legal.

The robot must start in starting configuration, not in match configuration. It must start at 60 inches.

I was under the same impression… however, can you provide the rule that states the STARTING CONFIGURATION is limited to 60" in height?

Chris, would you mind citing a rule? I went back to the rules to refute this claim myself and actually found that OP may have the correct interpretation. Hadn’t caught that…and I thought reading the rules 7 times was sufficient! ::rtm::

This is all I can find in the manual.

G22
ROBOT height (as defined in relation to the ROBOT) must be restricted as follows during the MATCH:

If in contact with the carpet in its AUTO ZONE and/or its PYRAMID, ≤ 84 in.
Otherwise, ≤ 60 in.

Violation: FOUL. If continuous or repeated violations, TECHNICAL FOUL.

hehe, I did the same thing. Searched the rule book for “STARTING CONFIGURATION” and “60”, couldn’t come up with anything stating robots needed to be under 60" in their starting configuration.

This came up in the discussion of my rules quiz. You can technically be 84" tall at the start, but you may never leave the C shaped area between your goals and the back of the pyramid (side furthest from the goals of the same color).

A hint is the blue box for R03, which reminds you to consider G22. If you consider it and are still 84" at start, that is your decision.

The STARTING CONFIGURATION is defined by R04 and in the definitions section. There is no reference to height, only that all parts of the robot must be within the frame perimeter. You may start the match up to the same 84" limit that appiles otherwise. We had occasion to add a fixed, 83" shot blocker to one of our alliance partners.

Starting at or below 84" deemed legal at Hub City:

Man, I’ve read that manual seven times, and I could have sworn you had to start under 60! Thanks for calling me out on this one, glad we got to the right answer.

I didn’t interpret it that way until I saw the HolyCows’ robot just after Stop Build day. It’s easy to miss. (Not that their robot is > 60" pre-match … just that their design inspired me to figure out what the starting limit is).
