My team has a canbot that we bring to events in our community, however it appears the drivetrain we use causes it to not be able to turn well on concrete. We use the andymark kop chassis and we were wondering if there was another drivetrain we could use to make it work better or if there is another fix for it.
Just put omni wheels in the corners to reduce scrub.
Duct tape over the tread may also be an option.
Ithe tread on the two center wheels more worn than the outer 4 wheels? The KOP chassis is supposed to have something like 1/8" of drop on the center wheels. If they have been worn down by running on concrete, there may be no drop.
If the center wheels are worn, you can replace them with new ones or swap them with the pair on the front (or rear. That would give you greater than normal drop with just the expenditure of some time. It may be easier to remove the outer chassis plates to get at the center wheels. Otherwise, you will have to remove the gearboxes and reinstall them which can be tricky.
Just realized I should clarify that I mean duct tape on the corner wheels.
We currently have duct tape on all of our wheels in our 2022 bot, It is changing in tube and the chains broke so it is currently two wheel drive. It has tread traction wheels so we put duct tape on all of them to prevent scratching the floor when indoors. It is very slippery so you can’t go fast but that is perfectly good for outreach events where we slow it down anyways. It get ripped off when we go on concrete so you just have to keep a roll of duct tape with you to reapply when inside.
You can see it here in this photo:
A demo bot doesn’t have to be fast. Put the lowest ratio you can in the gear box. The stock AndyMark wheels normally don’t a have a problem with concrete. As others have said make sure the center wheels aren’t worn. Make sure you have a fresh battery. How heavy is the robot? How well is the weight centered. You are using 4 motors on your drive train?
The robot is quite heavy and the weight is not particularly centered, and we are using four motors on the drivetrain
