… anyone happen to catch the disturbing episode of CSI that was on tonight with the murdering robots? My only tought was… there is no way FIRST would ever be portrayed in that way. Eventhough no one else might understand the pride we would have after watching that, at least we understand that our outcome is a greater impact on society.
I know this was a long time ago but I just dug up this thread. That episode was quite disturbing. What really pissed me off was the fact that one robot had Innovation First electronics and they mentioned something about six weeks. That episode really gave society the wrong impression.

I just have to comment in this thread…
I don’t think it was right, but I also think that the episode was based upon on early beliefs that the world will be taken over by robots.
I never saw the episode (I don’t watch much “modern” shows). But I don’t really think the six weeks has much to do w/ robotics. I don’t really see how this gave society the wrong impression though…if people believe that this is what FIRST really is, w/o seeing any matchs or anything, then poo on them

LOL, I like your attitude. We should all think like that.

hehe, thanks. It is true though. Just like the mis-conception about FIRST being like BattleBots (but I’m not going to argue that, it’s gettin kinda old IMHO).

The majority of people I talk to seem really dissapointed that FIRST robots don’t fight. What has society come to?
Um, do you mean “Why hasn’t society come to?”
Humanity has always loved death and destruction. Look at all the media coverage on and after 9/11. I saw the WTC collapse easily, several hundred times. That just shows that society, as a whole, still has a long way to come before they can accept FIRST as being non-destructive, and like the idea behind it.
My beef with the episode was purely technical.
Their telling me two folks trained to lift fingerprints and the like some how know how to reassemble a complicated machine from scattered parts in the course of a few hours with out the original desginers help?
You’ve got to be kidding me.
I know its just a show, but I’ve admired CSI for it’s interesting and accurate science. That just annoyed me.

Actually I think that during that time was a special situation. If they had done that long after the attacks had happened then you would be right but it really has not except for a few situations.

It really is no harder than one thousandth of the stuff they actually do in real life.

anyone who thinks FIRST robots don’t fight has obviously never seen any matches.the number of smashed boxes piled outside the arena during the Ypsilanti regional can attest to that…
(Yeah I know the thread is old, but I haven’t been to ChiefDelphi since 2002 ; )
For what it’s worth, many of the combat robot builders were not too happy with this episode either. Both the Steel Conflict event (whose arena was used) and Battlebots Inc. refused to have their names associated with the episode, and once it aired, many folks were disappointed in how we were portrayed.
One example, a post from our forums:
"I don’t know about you guys, but I am not amused.
We, as builders, are cast is a very negative light
The crime is caused by an incredibly stupid act (You plan on standing in front of… hazard perhaps… with the blade at full speed & the drive acting odd???
Builders are all “nerds” (the old version, the “avoid them” variety)
We’re not normal people, we look at a girl (who is NOT all that) and go home to “spank the monkey”
I asked my parents to watch this…
My stepson asked his girlfriend to watch…
Gee, thanks." -posted by Everseeker

one question - WHY?!?!
Well, after the 2002 “Zone Zeal” event, my team folded, and I ended up working 70 hours a week through the “Stack Attack” season. This season, I’ve decided my real job can just go to heck. ; ) -Pteryxx
