After watching this years competition, i cannot help but wonder, how would the Robots that we designed and built fare if a match between first robots and humans were to be played using standard soccer rules allowing for time outs to change batteries, which teams do you think would do the best, and what do you think the outcome would be?
Depends on the field. Assuming “standard soccer rules” includes field specifications, I would say humans. And that’s not only because the size of the field would give human players, who are more agile and responsive and advantage, but also because soccer is played on grass, a surface that I can’t imagine many robots being able to navigate on. However, I could imagine some robots being able to beat human players on, say, a Breakaway-size field with a carpeted surface. That is, after all, the terrain and field size robots were designed for.

Not only can humans prove more agile, but there also calls into a question about coordination and passing.
I don’t think that 67 could barrel its way past defenders to score without at least passing teh ball once, which can prove hard with these robots.

Yes. If it was on the Breakaway field, I imagine some robots plowing over a human.
There is a reason we aren’t allowed on the field after the match starts.
maybe bumpers on all surface area, that sounds like a nightmare. lets assume that the field is astro-turf, i think most robots would work extremely well on that.
Interesting… Robots may have a chance, but I would have to say humans. There’s no way a robot is getting a ball away from a human.
This does give me a thought. Maybe we can talk to our local pro soccer team and setup some demo at halftime or something. Thanks!
One of Robocups objectives is for a robot soccer team to beat a human team within 10 years on a standard soccer field.
