Rookie Team Curriculum - Help

Hello, I am from a rookie team. I am trying to organize the curriculum of studies for the members to learn how to build the robot. Is there some one that got a good order to begin or a good logic to how to structure from zero the course? thanks

As a founding member of my own high school robotics team three years ago, I understand this cliff of understanding very well. Although my approach through this was a little rough initially, I can offer some insight into what worked and didn’t.

First of all, I would definitely start with “what is FIRST Robotics?”. The importance of this can not be underestimated. Spending a day of just introducing it through explanations, watching game reveals, going over build season schedule, etc, and watching (not explaining quite yet) matches/robot reveals as well as whatever you can think of will set the ground for learning. Trying to teach someone about drive trains before teaching them about general robot/field size and similar other scenarios will leave them with little take-away. If at all possible, visit an off-season event and have new members spectate and go around to teams asking questions. Honestly, that is the best way to truly understand FIRST

As far as actual robot design, there are definitely very specific recurring designs that appear in FRC, especially related to the four year cycle. The general progression is from understanding drivetrains, knowing how to collect, store, and score a game piece, to field manipulation before looking into the nitty gritty “how”. There are many resources online from teams like 1114 that cover a lot of this and can save a lot of time in developing your own lessons. That being said, I am working on my own curriculum right now, and if you are interested in using it I would be happy to share it (just pm me). I have completed the full drivetrain curriculum so far with full videos of presenting them.

As former rookies, we know what it is like to start a team if you want to PM (Private Message) us on Chief Delphi or email us at [email protected] we would be happy to talk to you and walk you through the whole process! We have a whole list of different sponsorships, and sponsors that could help your team. We have lists and documents that can help you get through the season and we can also send you some tutorials if you are interested. As former rookies, we know what struggles you are going through, so we would love to help! Let us know what you are interested in and we will be glad to help! We had an exceptional first year competing and it ended off on the Einstein Field at the Houston Championships!!! We actually have a whole guide with curriculum and basic tutorials for rookie teams that we would love to share with you. We would love to help you out, let us know how we can help you!

Simbotics has created a lot of excellent resources for teams that outline everything from strategy to team management to design. I highly recommend looking those:
