Rover Wheel Bearings

Is there any way to put 1/2" bearings in the rover wheels? Unfortunately, I assumed that yesterday, but came to the lab this morning to put the wheels on our practice drive-train to no avail. Can we buy bearings that will fit? The bearings they came with seem to be undersized 1-1/8".

Also, I realize that an un-driven 3/8" axle would be strong enough, and I don’t want this to turn into a 25/35 chain discussion about strength. We have other reasons why we are using a 1/2" axle.

The bearings that came with the kit wheels last year are the size you need, they have a 1/2" hole in them, although they are a bit thinner. R8 is the size number, it is a very common part. Andy Mark sells them, as do many other suppliers.

The 1/2" bearings do work - we tried them last night. But, we want to check if changing the bearing will be legal with FIRST. The language in the Robot manual suggest we cannot modify the wheels from the vendor that might include the bearings. This question should be put to FIRST on WED when Q&A opens.

The wheels and bearings are separate parts in the KOP checklist…

In the KoP checklist the bearings are itemized seperately from the wheels. I would take this to mean that they are not an integral part of the wheel. In fact, I suspect many teams will use the wheels with a solid hub and a driven axle. But it never hurts to ask Q&A and get it on the record.

If you’d like I can find you the ebay vendor I bought ours from. They have a store front as well as an ebay shop and the ebay shop was cheaper by about 20%.

Combined with a discount from LIVE.com and you could pick up 40 or 50 bearings for under 50$. (If memory serves- I don’t have my cost accounting spreadsheet right now).

-Edit: This is the vendor I used last year.
