Does anyone know if the S6 Optical Shaft Encoder from U.S Digital (link below) is compatible with a Talonsrx? Can the 10 pin or 5 pin just plug directly into the talon? If not what breakout board do you use to do this?

Because it says that the encoder outputs quadrature, it is comparable with a talon. Though you could manually solder to the correct pins on the ribbon cable (definitely more effort than it’s worth), you could also buy this breakout board to plug in directly to the talon. I’m no software expert, but it should be pretty easy to integrate into your code, as well.

I prefer am-3281. It’s 3 dollars cheaper than the one you mentioned, and doesn’t require soldering. Still has diagnostic leds and fastens to the talon.
