If FIRST’s intent is to make this more or less a spectator sport, I think they made a good start by having a visible score on the field during play (they did this in 1995, but is was a much easier (and far less exciting) game then. I realize the accuracy was off, but it’s a good start.
I was kind of thinking thorugh how to make it more ‘spectator-friendly’ and thought I would throw some ideas out and see what would come of them.
One of the problems, to the casual observer, is that scoring is complicated. The average passer-by needs a disertation just to get started. By the same token I don’t want to see the level of complexity in the game go down in the least.
So I thought about a scoring display board for next year that had some visual cueing that would allow someone to figure out the scoring. For instance, below the numerical score would be lights that showed where the score wan coming from.
If we use this years game, row A could show number of floppies, row B would show the puck position doubler, row C the tripler for being on the puck, row D the elevation tripler, and so-on. Yes, you would need two or three people operating some switches to keep accurate score, but I think it would serve to enhance the game. Feel free to add…
