Fasteners are allowed in unlimited quantity as long as
they are used as fasteners.

What if screws/bolts are used as a pivot or pin. They are holding something together (like a fastener), but they also provide the pivot point (like an axle).

In the past FIRST has counted these as something other than fasteners. Right? Must these screws be bought from Small Parts?

An example… A pivot screw that holds two scissor lift members together. Is it a fastener or something else?

in theory, it fastens the wheel in place between the mounts.

According to FIRST it only counts as a fasterner if ALL it’s doing is fastening. It can be structural support, etc.

Matt who still enjoys the fact that velcro was consider a fastener when it was used to pickup floppies…

I know that last year, the original AHL specifically said fasteners could be used for fastening only. But, at some point during the season, they removed this restriction. I don’t see any sort of restriction saying that fasteners can only be used for fastening this year, i.e. they would be able to be used as a pivot point, etc. I could just be overlooking something in the rules, so don’t quote me on this just yet…

Well, I’m not sure if there’s a specific rule against but I figure if it’s primary purpose is not being a fastener than it’s not really a fastener now is it?

According to the Additional HW list any amount or kind of link pins are allowed. If a bolt is being used as a link pin, then it is considered a pin because of its function.

Back in May, I asked a question in regards to fasteners at the Team Forum.

Fasteners deal with 6 degrees of freedom (DOF). These are lateral movement in the X, Y, and Z directions, and rotation about the X,Y and Z directions.

For a robot wheel, the axle “fastens” the wheel to the robot by preventing movement up and down (Z axis) and fore and aft (Y axis), but not necessarily along the axle’s axis which would be left and right (X axis).

Likewise, the wheel axle prevents rotation about Y and Z, and only permits rotation around the X axis.

FIRST had mentioned that any component which would be called a fastener under normal use is acceptable as a fastener. It does not matter HOW you are using it, but whether a “lay person” would call it.

If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it must be a duck.
