SCRIW X (South Carolina Robotics Invitational & Workshops 2020)

What a year to have a milestone, huh?

For the tenth year running, FIRST Robotics Competition teams 1293 (Pandamaniacs) and 2815 (Blue Devil Mechanics) Present:

South Carolina Robotics Invitational and Workshops

SCRIW features about 27 teams in an exciting one-day tournament experience playing Infinite Recharge one more time on an official competition field. We’ll also have a wonderful slate of workshops on deck, and the usual slate of silliness including the annual mentor match for charity.

SCRIW is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2020, at Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina (same as last year). Pits will open at 8:00 AM, and we are usually tearing things down around 6:00.

To address the elephant in the room: Right now, we are planning for SCRIW to move forward like any other year. We will make a final determination on any needed changes in late September.

Registration is slightly different this year:

  • Registration is $350 if you register and pay by July 1, or anytime if your entire slate of regional or district events was suspended. We know dozens of teams in neighboring states didn’t get a chance to play and celebrate their season, and we hope this helps a bit.
  • Registration is $400 otherwise.
  • B-teams (second robots fielded by the same team) are $200 each, and registration for them opens August 1.
  • 2021 rookie teams compete on the house. (tagging @agunal since this was a topic in another thread)

Registration is open now at We hope to see you there!

You probably saw this one coming, but this email went out to recent SCRIW participants:

Hello, recent SCRIW teams! We hope you have been staying safe and staying in touch with your teams over the last several weeks.

FIRST is making great efforts to keep teams safe and make the 2021 season as sustainable as possible. On May 13, they announced one of the unprecedented methods of doing so: replaying INFINITE RECHARGE with “adjustments to the game”. FIRST also shared in the same announcement that they are not allowing any off-season events to use their fields this year. After evaluating all the options, our planning committee has agreed that SCRIW X must be postponed to 2021.

The SCRIW Planning Committee is working to put on an event to bring the community together this fall, pending clearance from the schools. (SCRIW IX-and-a-half, if you will.) The working idea is an event with small robots derived from the FRC parts ecosystem, so they’ll be cheap and rewarding to build and easy to recycle back into the big robots later.

Details will come once we know more about what we’ll be allowed to host, but we are targeting these four dates: October 17 (our original date for SCRIW X), November 14, December 5, and January 8 (the Friday before the 2021 Kickoff).

Many traveling performers part company with “I’ll see you down the road”, since it’s rarely certain when they’ll cross paths next. Both FIRST and SCRIW are in it for the long haul, and we’ll see you down the road.

Also, tip of the hat to 3824, HVA RoHAWKtics, for being the one team to register and even send a check for SCRIW X before the brakes were slammed on.

We’ll keep you posted on the next step, once we know it ourselves.
