My question isn’t only CD-forums related, but I hope it helps me read the forums more quickly and more often.
Is there a way to adjust Firefox (or my computer…IE seems to have the same problem) so I can see an entire post without scrolling left-and-right? I like to read posts and see what’s going on, but it’s hard when you shift fully to the right-and-left for every line in some of the longer posts. I’ve also had this problem with other forums and ESPN’s/MLB’s Gamecast/Gameday, if you’re familiar with those.
I apologize if this is the wrong section for asking, i just couldn’t find a much better alternative within the CD forums. And I heard that CD is a great place to find out really cool stuff.
I noticed with my wide screen monitor it always seems to fit, with space on the sides, while on my parents “square” monitor it doesn’t show it all. I would guess if you adjust the resolution that might take care of it, but I’m far from a guru with stuff like that.
Unless there is a photo wider than my screen, the text always automatically sizes itself to my screen. I am using IE6 under Win XP, nothing special in the setitngs.
You can either increase the resolution of your screen, or you can go into your user cp, then go to Edit Options, then scroll all the way to the bottom and change the default 980px to 100%.
I’d suggest that of these two options, you try to increase* the resolution of your screen first, since that will fix the side scrolling problem for every website you visit. The trend for the past few years has been an increase in screen resolution, so that many websites now “require” users to have a resolution of at least 1024x768 to display properly**, otherwise you will be doing a lot of side scrolling.
Since I do a lot of CAD work, I usually leave my monitors at the highest resolution possible. (Hurray for 1920x1200!)
Windows: right click on desktop, go to Properties/Personalise, then go to Settings Tab and adjust the resolution slider. Mac: go to System Preferences then click on Displays, and choose a higher resolution.
** Unless you are using an iPhone/cell phone version of their website, which are designed for small screens.
If you view Chief Delphi on high res monitors, and you maximize the window (most people, when using Windows, always do this), it becomes difficult to read things when they stretch to 30 or 40+ words per line. Most readability studies show that the “limit” for ease of readability should be a maximum of about 15 words per line.
So rather than force all the users to stop always maximizing their application windows, the default on the web page is set to 980px.
Also, I think Brandon also set the default page size to 980px, due to CD-Media acting weird if it was viewed smaller than 980px wide.
