We have come down to these 2 ideas to achieve our strategy but have never built either and don’t feel we can do both. So we are seeking advice.
Mid resource team, some mentors but not daily. Access to CNC mill. Mid level design/build skills
Is one significantly more difficult to design/build/iterate in your experience?
Arm is looking to be about 30" long
Actuator on end 10-15 lbs - really guessing on this based on current prototype.
Will we have difficulty powering our 4 bar on the carriage?
Thank you
From my experience in 2011 putting a 4-bar on an elevator it was definitely not a simple task, and rarely the fastest way to go, as both require tradeoffs that hurt each other. A wrist on an arm can be doable but you will need to make sure the programmers are comfortable and with adequate time to make it functional.
More motors is always heavier. We were having the same exact discussion yesterday on my team. We didn’t want to do the staged elevator like last year, but have not done a large arm, and have never done a 4-bar that carries a mechanism.
One option, which we may explore is a belt or chain alternative to the 4-bar. Code Orange (3476) did it last year, and others too I’m sure. Check out the 3D model of the arm on GrabCad. Look for the green belt.
