The Segway P series was officially announced today, and is now listed at Amazon.com. It will cost $3,995 ($500 less than the larger I series). Somehow, I expected it to be less.
I thought it would be around $3,250…
YAAAAYY! I’m glad it’s finally out, but I’m disappointed about the price. I was hoping it’d be closer to the old $2000 estimate. Oh well, some day I’ll own one.
Heck, if it was $3,000, I would seriously consider buying one.
For a extra $500 you can buy the I. I would take the I over the P any day. I would actualy take a “Alpha” over the I any day.
The alpha that I have ridden allows you to go “Full speed” even when only 2 rider-detection buttons are down, it has a much softer speed limiter and has a bit different color scheme.
I’m missing something (maybe a brain). What’s the “alpha”? I’m guessing it’s not one of the Segway line because I’ve never seen it on their website. I’m clueless.

The alpha is simply a “test version” of the segway.
If you remeber when the segway was on GMA, all those where alpha and beta models… and well Dean was on his P.
Although, Dean has gotten a new P… a production model

Ok, so maybe se can guess. P seems to mean pedestrian. Maybe RMP is Road Master Pro. It’s gonna be 3x faster with antilock brakes and a CD player. Then those people who complained about the P model can truly say “SUV of the sidewalk.” 
OK, it has been about a month. The “RMP” is the “Robot Mobility Platform” model. There are only 15 of them. DARPA is currently sponsoring a program to examine the use of a modified Segway, and the RMP models have been developed for use by the project teams. The robots being developed by the project can tap directly into the Segway control system, and allow the robot to “drive” the Segway by directly providing control signals (i.e. the robot doesn’t have to “lean forward” to make the Segway move). The most advanced (so far) is the “Segwanaut” (an upgrade of the Robonaut Project) shown below, that was recently demonstrated at several locations in Washington, DC. You can read more about it here.

So have they figured out how to allow the brain to send signals directly into the program so I don’t have to lean forward or twist the handle? If so, let me know and I’ll saw my legs off! (BU wants them anyway)

I think there is only one. NASA has a project to create a robot with the same range of motion of a astronaut in a spacesuit, and they stuck it on a segway. And it works.
It was in DC at NASA HQ recently. So cool.
