Fully reading the rules is perhaps one of the most important things to do. Highly recommend spending a few extra minutes each night doing that, it will help a lot later on.
Having a pre cadded drivetrain is fine, although I believe you are technically required to make it public for everyone to see.
Thatâs a fair move. However, it also comes with risks.
For instance, if the same CAD file is used to build the frame from year to year, that CAD file is required to be public prior to Kickoff (R303). If the CAD file is modified, that rule does not apply.
I originally read your post as re-using the exact same frame, which would land under R302 (and, quite possibly, exceptions given in R302).
On your last paragraph: On a team that size, someone has the time to read and understand the rules. Might not be you, but someone does. Particularly if you start now, with the evergreen rules in 2023âs Manual. Interestingly enough, every rule cited in this thread so far has been an evergreen rule. Outsourcing rules knowledge to the community is a gambleâyou might get incorrect answers, and âbecause CD said soâ doesnât fly at competition.
Read the manual.
Read team updates.
Read team Q&A.
It doesnât take that long, that first day is best used by most to understand the game and not designing robots. Robots can wait until Sunday or Monday. With small teams there is an excellent argument to optimize by not jumping in too fast and wasting resources.
For what it is worth, as someone who tries to be an âanswer-er of rules questionsâ on CD at kickoff (using my years of experience to hopefully help people along) I will not always get things correct despite my best efforts.
Shameless plug, but I made https://rules-search.pages.dev which is pretty helpful for finding relevant rules. It has semantic search that lets you search things like âwhat wire gauge should i use for 20 amp wiresâ and itâll give you the matching rules.
i saw your post earlier! this is a great resource, thanks so much for putting it together - this year on kickoff day Iâm going to pour over the rules, and Iâll be sure to utilize your software!
