Should I buy a Mac or a PC?

I seem to be able to do all I need with a PC, there is some video stuff I could use a mac for, but my brother says that there’s video stuff he can’t do on his mac that he needs a PC for! so it’s probably a matter of whether you want to pay for the perceived value. I don’t, about 10% of computer users do. I admit that I’m a cheapskate.

I sort of agree with this point to some extent, especially when things get super busy and I’m doing the 15-18 hour days, you just want the truck and then computer to just work.

I guess the thing with me is I want “one laptop” to do everything for me, so while a Mac would do everything I need from live video to everything else there was one problem even in running windows on a Mac and that was my radio systems programming software, this would mean two computers with one just for the radio stuff. with PC I have everything on one machine.

I was an a scene today and one of the camera guys from another station had an ipod touch, it blew me away! and it scared the heck out of my blackberry. No doubt Apple makes some nice stuff and I’m sure the ipad will be good as well.

A bit expensive though when compared to an Asus and Mac’s are not as durable as a Thinkpad or toughbook as well.

I still for some reason and maybe it’s just the nerd in me but I am hooked on PC.

The new Unibody Macbooks are milled out of a single block of 6061-T6. They’re far stronger than any windows running computer on the market (except for the mil-spec ones).

BUY MAC NOW!!!

Having owned many Macs and PCs, including the Macbooks machined from solid, the AL cases are generally stronger than plastic ones, but the case is rarely the part that fails when I break my computers. Normally the hard drive goes first, or LCD screen.

I’m seriously considering buying a Toughbook or other milspec computer next time I purchase one. I am rough on my electronics.

Are there any Toughbook’s or other milspec pc laptops that have the high end resources like let’s say my Asus G51, I do video rendering which is CPU/GPU intensive and last time I checked the Toughbook didn’t even come close and was very expensive.

I am very happy with the Asus but the toughbook toughness would be nice to have as working in news the equipment can get bumped around a bit at times.

Any thoughts?

You need this pc!

Unfortunately it’s a 80386 processor hiding in there…

Being raised in a PC world, I would recommend PCs. I find they are easier to work with.

Not even a 486 in there eh? I remember when doing radio systems programming and some programs wouldn’t run because the 486 was too fast!

they had the “turbo” button to slow them down to 4.77

You know I vaguely remember something like that actually, when I was in school I worked one summer at a radio shop and we programmed and maintained radios for many customers including one fire department and I remember something about having to slow down those space age Pentium computers so the Motorola RSS would run in DOS, the preferred machine was a 386 and at the fastest a 486

I probably should have stayed with radio and electronics but I ended up in news which I don’t regret too much to be honest, I’ve enjoyed a lot of it.

How about now shifting gears and talking about iphone vs blackberry or other similar device.

I’ve been with Blackberry since it was called a RIM pager up here and I have no complaints, I have see a fellow camera operator show me his iphone and ipod touch and I was very impressed but I am still very happy with blackberry.

Now my older blackberry is almost done, almost all the letters are worn off the keypad among other things and I may have to replace it in a couple of months.

Here is the problem I am facing, I can’t find a blackberry app that shows weather radar with road map AND places my GPS current position icon on that map, in covering severe weather I have use Grlevelx.com radar with custom map overlays and GPS and its been great but new laws in Ontario mean we can’t have laptops open while driving and while the laptop can be running with lid closed I can stop park and take a peek when needed but I came across this app for the iphone and now all of a sudden I’m not sure what to do.

A storm tracker/radar/GPS app and this would be much easier to sneak a peek at while on the road.

It’s just one app but if it works as advertised then all of a sudden there is this sudden temptation to look at the iphone.

Here’s the analogy I like to use:

Power -------> simplicity

It’s an inverse relationship between power and simplicity. As the power goes down, simplicity goes up.

So you’ve got a full UNIX shell underneath the hood of your Windows machine? You can simply enable SVN to track your code, and host the repository on an apache server that’s already installed? How about a native scripting language for automating tasks? Can you set Cron jobs for little things that you do daily? Or does Windows not do that?

My point is this: It’s not always as linear as you make it out to be. Yes, OSX has a “simple” UI, but under the hood it will always out-pace Windows. Until on Windows I can install git and grab the latest builds automatically for an experimental web browser without needing to sacrifice a child every time, I won’t move back to it.

This is as helpful and annoying as the Mac detractors.

BTW, 5 year old PB G4 still runs great, but I’ve upgraded to a 13" MBP. Can’t say the same thing about a lot of my friend’s PCs’ they bought for the same price (or more).

My 5 yr old P4 still works great, but I replaced the motherboard a year ago with a core 2 duo, which is really easy to do using a 10 year old ATX case.

I borrowed my brother’s 3 yr old Mini, he gave up on it…I’m trying to find the attraction, haven’t yet, I’ll keep playing with it though.

Once you start playing with Automater and AppleScript, a whole world of other uses opens up.

Also, Expose and Spaces make it impossible for me to go back to a Windows machine. It’s just too darn convenient to use.

Congrats on comparing an old top of the line system with a bottom of the line. Want a biased cookie?

I’m not sure what you mean by that…I have a rather low end PC (it was low end when I moved up to a P4, and again when I moved up to a C2D, both processors were just a bit over $100), and the Mac Mini was bottom of the line.

Mac doesn’t have much in the way of “low end”, especially in the laptop department, when compared to PC stuff.

Personally I didnt but If I am thinking to try also. Digg is supposed to bring good traffic but only if you promote something valuable and new there NOT your MFA site. BTW where do you think to buy diggs?

Anyway this is counted as unethical marketing…
